hi, did anyone ever force shutdown an OS X based laptop?
will it cause any harm - hardware wise?

please also post a reply stating that if it is often/rarely/once/never (you don't have to if you want to but it would help :))

    thank you very much :)

During the 1 year and a bit that I have had this Macbook, I have had about half a dozen kernel panics, two of which was caused by Parallels booting into Windows (I know it's not Windows' fault, but just though I'd mention it :p).

My Macbook's still working fine. No visible issues yet (except for that piece of plastic on the case that came off, but Apple replaced the case in a week).

WOW ( o_O), OS X freezes more than i have ever imagined! my CoreDuo macbook never froze on me. my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro did though... i presume it was video driver issues (always freezes when resizing MPEG format videos on quicktime).

Mine threw kernel panics when I put the Sonnet SATA card in my G5 tower until I realised the firmware wasn't up to date. I've been good since I got that updated.

My old G4 though, that thing had a 1 year uptime once. It never crashed on me.

I've had about two kernel panics. Safari, however, does seem to crash on me every now and then...I'm annoyed at that, as I do enjoy using Safari but if its always crashing I would prefer to use something that crashes less. Hope Apple fixes that.

That's weird, wobble...have you tried doing all the troubleshooting stuff?

No, I don't use those, wobble...I use Safari normally, I've gotten used to the interface. However, occasionally I do use Camino.

I've only had one kernel packet in almost a year, but my MBP freezes probably once to twice month. It's usually trying to wake it up from sleep, or a memory leak from something like FF or Transmission.

I've had a lot of kernal panics, but it's mainly to do with hardware(plugging in/unplugging)

Now that Modly mentioned updating the firmwave, I should try that, never thought of that.

But basically I've had no bad affects, firefox remembers what sites I was on and unison keeps my queue, so I'm happy.

Though I hope they fix them in 5.2

Only 1 kernal panic for me, and then it wouldn't turn on anymore. Resetting PRAM, and no problems since then!

That was about 3 months ago? :)

And like Sam said, yes safari freezes sometimes. (Especially running Youtube I find...)

I had to do a shutdown once, or twice thanks to iTunes. It just became totally unresponsive.

Had my first Kernel panic. I was wondering what was going on!?!? Safari stopped working, lost wifi connection. I was transferring a movie to my Apple TV while downloading a torrent and surfing the Internet. Hopefully, Kernel Panics won't happen again, but it's a computer and anything can happen from time to time.

Yes I had to force shutdown. But it was on windows side (bootcamp).
I guess Microsoft is known for this. =)

both aperture and firefox crash on me from time to time... usually when I am doing more intensive work.

If I am just surfing, listening to music, writing, it pretty much never crashes.

When I am really cranking it... it hangs (spinning wheel) quite a lot and crashes occassionally.

I get the grey screen about once a week. It's annoying that Linux is such a hassle to install on a MacBook, because I find it so much more stable than OS X.
