Hey guys,
Due to an extremely stupid situation my mbp froze. Actually it was more like the finder window froze and when i chose to relaunch finder then pretty much everything on the desktop froze and was only able to move my mouse. Hence, I had to force shut down the machine (holding down the power button for 5 seconds).
This might sound really paranoid, but it is a question I have to ask, being a first time mac user. THis is actually the first time ever (within the last 3 months) that I had to force shut down the machine and normally I never even had any freezing issues at all (no spinning beachballs until now). I just want to know whether this one time force shut down will have any long term repercussions on my machine? please dont offer any sarcastic comments. I know i am being extremely paranoid, but you know how it is when something goes wrong the first time on your favourite machine.

None. I tend to run the Disk Utility and verify and repair disk and permissions when something goes wrong and after Software Installs/updates. It still amazes me how many thing are fixed after updates/installs.

cheers guys. really appreciate the replies and thank you so much. Out of curiosity, like in windows you can scan and see if there are any issues after the forced shutdown - is there anything similar to this on mac?

Yes, It what I suggested in the previous post.

hey, thanks for that. But how do you exactly run the repair disk utility?
-
It's in the Utility folder on your Mac.

Can anyone please tell me what the difference is there between repair disk permissions and repair disk?
-
yes, mac do sometimes freezes. which require hard reset (hold power button to force shut down) either of software bugs or driver or hardware problem (the last two is relatively rare).
i need to do this once in a while with my mac. as i'm sure with almost everyone that own a mac.
no, there is no long term problem to speak of. just do repair disk permission and repair disk.
even the harddisk is built to handle that kind of stuff anyway... just don't do it too often. do as you would in windows world.
repair disk permision is relating to OS. r=read w=write. do this when there is software issue. or every once in a while after doing a lot of system changes. (eg. software update, changing password, file vault encryption changes, deleting/adding user)
repair disk is relating to File system. this is the same as disk check in windows.
in case you're wondering whats the difference between verify and repair and which you should do.
verify just means that. verifying without repair.
repair will verify then repair straight away.
i tend to do verify first then repair. there is absolutely no problem repairing it straight away, as the software will not do anything if it does not find a problem. -
Thank you very much sir with your detailed reply. Appreciate the help
