How do I tell him he just spent waaaaaay to much for hardware?
-
-
You don't.
-
Usually with macs you're probably paying for the quality and the superior OS, in my opinion. However, the hardware is more expensive, but not waaaaaay too expensive like you said.
-
How do I tell you that you are waaaaaaay cool for dissing macs in a mac forum? -
Watch as you start to envy him and when your notebook dies (and his WILL last longer) you will get one... trust me...
-
-
Even if you believe it to be true, there's no reason to use your own personal opinions to detract from his enjoyment just for the heck of it after he's already bought it.
It's one thing if you were trying to give him advice before he bought it - but afterwards, just congratulate him and wish him luck with his new machine. Why possibly make him feel regret that he otherwise might not have felt after it's already too late? That's just being unnecessarily cruel.
Even if someone bought a Packard Bell today, there's no sense in mocking him after the fact. That's like how a 6-year old dangles his candy in front of another kid and says "my candy's bigger than yours!" If you really cared that much, you should have dissuaded him before the purchase. -
Let us not speak of said company ever again. -
Incidentally, in another thread, we were using car analogies for laptops (again...), and they decided that my old Packard Bell was the equivalent of a Yugo -
You don't need to own a mac to run OSX anymore. -
People who say "OMG IM IN LOVE WITH MACS I GET NO VIRUSES FROM USING THEM" clearly don't know what the hell they're doing. -
umm... my powerbook 1.5ghz has lasted me 3 great years (still works and i wil keep it). it's just now that i'm actually feeling its lag. after win 98 i refuse to go back and after seeing vista, i will not be converting any time soon. i don't have a problem paying for a machine that will last me for the next 3 years plus.
kthx -
although i do like ibm if i had to switch to a win machine.
-
-
Anyway, still want me to get you a copy of XP Pro Virus edition to put on your MBP?
*tax taken at 7% -
Wow, I can't believe no one can tell the OP is trolling. Why would anyone come on a Mac forum asking us to help them tell their friend they spent way too much on a Mac? It's not like we are going to agree.
-
T1mmer, please edit your post to delete the link to running Mac OS X on a PC. NBR does not allow discussion or references to running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware.
-
[edited out - please stop posting links about this - NBR staff]
-
Swarmer, please edit your post to delete the link to running Mac OS X on a PC
.
But seriously, NBR doesn't allow discussion or reference to illegal activities and running OS X on a PC is an illegal activity. Instead of getting this thread closed please edit your link t1mmer so discussion can continue. You too, swarmer.
-
Damit sam....you do sound like a 20yr old!
-
. Its ridiculous.
-
As I've told you before, I don't believe it to be illegal if you own a legal copy of OS X.
If a court of law rules otherwise (in the U.S.), I'll remove the link. -
Actually, Sam, I think you made a good point in another thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2254251&postcount=13
-
Well anyways, swarmer, t1mmer's link has been edited out by mujy (a moderator). As I said and as you said its hard to distinguish what's illegal and what's not nowadays, but following NBR's rules, discussion on running OS X on a PC is not allowed on NBR. So will you edit your link out or does a moderator have to do it?
-
Where is this rule? Is it in writing? I've only heard you claim it exists.
And NBR doesn't allow discussing OS X on a PC, but allows discussing running OEM Windows on non-qualified machines?
I know that NBR doesn't allow discussing activity that is illegal, but I don't believe that this falls in that category. -
Well, if it didn't I see no reason why the moderator would edit the link out. This isn't the first time; I've seen many threads be closed and marked for deletion for discussion on OS X on a PC. If you disagree with the decision please PM the moderators or administrators.
-
Umm... if a moderator objects to something I write, then he or she can PM me. I'd be happy to discuss it with them.

If anyone here owns two different Macs try using the install disc of one in the other. So if you have an iMac then try using the iMac's OS X install disc in your Powerbook or Macbook Pro, it won't work. Apple makes the disc work in one Mac type to prevent illegal sharing of software that ships on certain Macs. Since Apple does not ship a UB version of Mac OS X then this discussion of installing OS X on hardware other than Apple's is mute.
-
Well, the reason it's a bit of a gray area at this point is because:
1: Like hldan said, they don't technically sell UB versions of Tiger right now so you couldn't buy that version separately anyway. That aside, if you bought an Intel Apple, then it already has at least Tiger in UB included and licensed with it, so Apple doesn't have a reason to sell copies of it.
2: Even if you bought a copy of say, Leopard UB when it's released, I believe it's stated in the EULA that it's only licensed to be installed on Apple branded hardware.
Anyway, back on topic, there's not much point in telling someone that they made a bad choice by going with a MBP after they're bought it, as it tries to do nothing more than make them regret the purchase. -
Apple EULA - You cannot run OS X on a non-apple machine.
Cut, dried, set in stone...despite what you want, that is the legal terms you agreed to when getting the OS.
I think this thread is going a little too far off topic... -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
actually the EULA is not the be all end all.
if in the EULA it stated that by running the software you grant Steve Jobs the deed to your house, your car, and agree to shine his shoes once a week on wednesdays, you would not be required to comply in order to install the software. the EULA can bind you to some things that they cannot legally bind you to.
now, whether or not that is the case here is uncertain. i bet in a court of law, if you owned a mac, uninstalled the operating system from the mac, and proceeded to install it on 1 alternate hardware setup, you would be immune. thats just my bet.
either way, running osx on a pc is HORRIBLE. most things simply do not work. try running logic express on your silly osx-pc. or photoshop hah. guarantee it will not work. -
-
And CS2 isn't Universal Binary...so it will run slower than CS3 does or even CS2 on a PowerPC. But CS3 is Universal Binary and runs much faster. -
I know. I specifically used CS2 as an example because it sucks on a mac. CS3 is much better than CS2 on a mac.
-
t1mmer is just mad cause he bought an IBM and his friend's mac looks better, works better, and now he regrets getting the thinkpad.
just my .02$
haha I am glad my popcorn finished on page 2. -
Hahahha I concur with sheanhs. He's just jealous because his ibm is ugly and made out of plastic while his friends mbp is made out of aluminum and has style. =P. BUt on the other hand just wait to see whose laptop breaks down 1st. If his mbp breaks down 1st then you can tell him then lol
-
.
t1mmer, pretty much the consensus here is we feel your friend didn't make a bad choice and you don't need to tell him he spent waaaay too much on hardware.
And jetnis, if the MacBook Pro breaks down first Apple will just replace it with new one.
Okay I'm out again. I'm on vacation y'know. I'm just on the hotel's WiFi. See ya guys later tonight. Behave yourselves
.

You guys are so utterly clueless. Its like you speak non-sense to each other and promote eachothers delusions of grandeur without really researching anything. Or even knowing the specifics of anything. Don't any of your realize thats what Apple attempts to get you to do. Teach you to never question what they have made, and never research other options because apple is dogmatically the best?
I mean there are lots of pluses, but most of the recent statements are just wrong. A thinkpad is manufactured to a degree that a MBP could only DREAM of. You can whip that thing across the room and it'll be just fine. Second apple will not just magically fix anything for you... they'll take it away. Meanwhile IBM will have fixed the problem on the spot, by the next day.
Get real... Apple has its good stylish designs and Unix OS, but don't be ignorant. They are far from the best manufactured machines. -
this is the reason why few people are using macs.....it is becuase they are intended for users with childish behavior!!!!......I'm just sayin'
I mean common, look at what you guys are saying to each other......it all comes down to personal preference......again, I'm just sayin'
LOL -

and i did not get the 2.4 for $2400
i did the 15.4'' 2.2 glossy under the student discount for $1799 w/ a free iPod nano and printer plus an Airport Express for $99. -
I just got a 2.4ghz version, I have to say, other than speed and display, my Dell Inspiron 6000 was better in every which way.
-
Apple and OSX have their pros, as well as many cons, but the same applies to just about any notebook.
There are many people who have claimed and still claim, in the Apple forums and in other forums, that the Dell Inspirons are the "perfect" and "best" laptops hands down - and then go on to illustrate the price difference between an Inspiron and a MBP while claiming they're the "same". This isn't unique to Apple--I've seen such comparisons of the Inspiron against Latitudes, Thinkpads, Asus, and Alienwares--in which comparison the Inspiron somehow miraculously always ends up as the "winner".
This is what happens when people use only their own needs and opinions as the standard to judge what is "good". It's idiotic, but that idiocy runs just as high in PC-users as in Mac-users - it's not something Apple invented. -
so how many posts you think it will take before this thread gets locked? Ha, I am guessing 3..
-
-
no ****, i meant from there on, so ok sorry, i meant 49
-
You're his friend. Respect his decisions.
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
@ t1mmer,
when i said "photoshop" i did not mean cs2, as you interpreted. i actually referred to cs3, which is what i use on osx. its a great piece of software.
also, i got my laptop for 2299, and it came with an ipod ($200) and printer ($100). if you were interested in buying those two things anyway, the mac seems to be a really great deal for the money. it was not necessary to pay shipping, because apple has retail stores. so my 2299 was sans shipping
as i implied but did not explicitly say before, there isn't really a point in trying to hack os x onto the mac. from a user's perspective, there isn't anything that you can do on a os x that can't be done in windows. the real reason os x is so useful is the hardware/software go hand in hand. you buy them both, so you can expect everything to work together, you can expect automatic driver / firmware updates, no driver compatibility issues, etc. thats the real reason os x is valuable. the hardware and software are both made in house. you sort of destroy the value of osx by hacking it onto the x86 machine. software updates will most likely crash your system, plus you have to come up with your own drivers... etc... most software is hit or miss as to whether it works or not... for example i do not think you can run photoshop cs3 or logic express on a hackintosh, which really drives the stone into the ground for my point: hacked macintosh is pointless. just use windows: duh.
Friend just got a new MBP...
