So I don't have a laptop that will attract thieves. That's alright with me.

Chris, it's a good thing you didn't get the overpriced 2.4 version. I guess you made the right choice on that.

the 2.4 ghz version is very expensive compared to the 2.2 ghz version.

still- i don't feel like that is apple's fault so much as it is intel's.

i personally went for it because i need every ounce of processing power i can get (i will be using matlab, mathematica, labview, etc in school)

the extra hard drive space and vram was like a bonus.

the fact is, the 2.4ghz cpu is plain expensive, but it will offer a performance benefit in cpu intensive tasks. go look at the pricing, (just for the processor, on newegg or something) it will make you laugh.

still for 2299 with $300 in freebies (that i was literally going to buy in the store anyway) i payed $200 dollars more than you did (except i didn't pay shipping, so maybe a little less than 200 difference), increased my cpu clock speed by 20%, got myself a $200 dollar ipod, and got apple-quality. i also got a printer and heck i even payed my "apple tax" which looks to be like negative $200 or so. plus i get to use unix instead of vista which is horrible

apple quality means LED backlight, keyboard backlight, nice internal speakers (much louder and clearer than the thinkpad, which my cousin got) and i get a clean aluminum brushed machine.

the thinkpad is a good choice too. in place of little convenience features you pay for real build quality. lenovo is going to make a serious business machine that will certainly stand up to the test of time. with xp pro and a quadro card you know you will have a very stable and secure system that isn't going to break and isn't fragile. they are just different choices.

still, your friend made a very good choice.

eeeeh...all laptop speakers that I've ever encountered are worthless, including on thinkpads, Macbook pros, dells,...you name it :p

I was playing some music and for the heck of it decided to unplug my klipsch 2.1 speakers just to hear the difference - god it was awful. I can't even bear to think about it :p

I mute the volume when I'm on the go without speakers or headphones :p Silence is better than the quality of the stuff that comes out of laptop speakers.

still- the macbook pro has some of the best (awful) internal laptop speakers. they might be an order of magnitude lower than decent external speakers, but the thinkpad one's are like another full order of magnitude down. i don't mind using the speakers for non audiophilic things, for example. the convenience of having *decent speakers is large on a laptop, when you can't carry around real ones.

No offense, but that's some fuzzy logic.

Leave a MBP and T61p out on a table. No thief is just going to take the MBP.

    They'd take both. :p

Tell them they're only allowed to take one, and they'll take the one that doesnt look like it was designed in the '80s.

So you admit that the Thinkpad has zero style?

6 pages of feeding the troll...I thought NBR was better than this.

Uhh, I said nothing about it having zero style. Just because it has a tried and true design doesn't mean to ditch it.

    Take the Ducati Monster

Pretty much the same visually as the first Monster that was built more than 10 years ago, yet is still an awesome looking bike.
