It would be a steal for the consumer, but the artists would lose out. Those used to getting thousands from itunes would now receive what i'm guessing would be a paycheck that everyone on itunes would recieve equally. Especially since nobody is paying for any one artists contribution. Then again...maybe they can distribute the profits based on how many downloads each artists recieves. Idk. Sounds sketchy.

That'd be great. That's the one little thing I regret about selling my Zune for an iPhone, no way to browse through a huge collection of albums, find stuff you like, then download as much as you want without paying a huge amount of money. That might not be the smartest move for Apple though. If iPods cost $100 more, and around $150 more than comparable media players, which media player do you think the average person would buy? Most people get their music off of LimeWire (I personally hate LimeWire), anyway. When Apple releases a 3G iPhone, if they had an unlimited music plan, then that'd be sweet being able to download any song or album I want no matter where I am.

I think it would be more logical to do a pay per month deal where you pay $X a month for unlimited music downloads.

That's what a few online stores do ($15 a month for unlimited music) and they've did decently. They didn't do too well because Apple only licenses DRM for their products for themselves and a few select companies, and most people use iPods or iPhones for their music, so since music from the online music stores that offer unlimited music on a $15 a month subscription don't work on Apple's products, that's why they've never succeeded. So if iTunes offers it on a monthly basis, Apple would get a huge amount of subscribers.

If it's a subscription service you'll have to have DRM, you're paying $15 a month to access the online store and your own music library that you downloaded from the store. If there was no DRM, then most people would only pay $15 for the first month and download hundreds of dollars worth of songs then cancel. There are ways to remove DRM, but they lower the quality of the music.
