Is there an easy to use free image editor for leopard? I need to be able to choose how many pixels an image is.

Very cool. What is this X11 stuff? why don't they just make it work normally?

Is there one that doesn't require X11? I'm not even sure what X11 is or what it does.

Just install. You do not need to understand X11.

Does it mess with the OS or anything? My mac has been 100% stable so far in leopard.

Nope. It won't screw with the OS.

The windows version requires the x11 GTK as well.

The x11 installer should be on your Mac OS X disc.

Gimp installed and ran just fine on my Leopard Macbook. I don't even remember doing anything about X11. The only clunky aspect is having to quit the x11 application after quitting Gimp. Gimp is very nice and you shouldn't think twice about using it on Leopard.

Yeah, there's GIMP for Mac, and don't worry about X11, you can install it from the Mac OS X Install Discs, it doesn't interfere unless you need it.

Well, to run GIMP, you need to have X11, which I guess you can consider almost like an "emulator". When you don't need X11, it just isn't there.

    Why don't you?
GIMP is open source, developed mainly by volunteers who ask for no compensation and let everyone use their product for free... and you're free to improve it in any way you like.

Whoa. Hold on there. You don't have to lift even one little pinky finger to make Gimp work on Leopard. You install it and it works. No digging for install disks. No configuration. The only down side is you have two things to close when you're done.

Even if it only required 30 minutes of actual coding to make Gimp work natively on Mac (without having to look at an "X11" window), I wouldn't want to create my own "fork" and have to maintain it. I suggest you leave well enough alone and download Gimp and just use it.

You could as well use another open source program, Seashore for simple image editing. I don't know how it compares to GIMP in terms of functionality, etc.; but it doesn't require installing X11.

I'm pretty sure X11 is now installed by default in Leopard so it's a core OS feature and you don't need to worry about it.

Oh, one thing I just noticed is that Photoshop is now available online as a beta from Adobe using flash.

    https://www.photoshop.com/express

Haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to be free for now, and is an interesting concept.

I tried it and it offers more than iphoto but probably less than aperture and of course a LOT less than photoshop. Needless to say, it offers a lot less than gimp but it offers about 15 canned image correction options ranging from colorize and white balance to cropping to rotating to a handful of distortions but (sadly) not skewing (perspective correction).

Should note that Gimp also installs X11 on windows...

At least last time I tried it.

I edited an image in express and was unable to skew the image. I was able to apply some nice color corrections and do some cropping but I lost a good bit of the edges of the canvas. It turns out express keeps an original so I went back to express, undid my changes, then downloaded the original and used photoshop to square up the image properly.

My photo was of a painting my daughter did and it was a t****zoid in the jpg file. The native photoshop (psd) file in 8 bit per channel color is over 38 meg for a 3000 x 2300 image. Jeez. Anyway, I will also take a look at how hard it is to correct the skew in gimp when I get a chance. Gimp is tiding me over for now, but I see a photoshop upgrade (from my old windows CS2 copy) in my future eventually.

Seashore, as mentioned above, is based on GIMP but does not use X11.

That said, X11 is not a bad thing to have installed, don't worry about it. It just enables you to use a few more things, really :)

I use SeaShore ... An easier program for simple graphics editing in my opinion.
