Is MBP with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128GB too weak to play games in bootcamp/windows![]()
(I'm thinking of buying the base model which only has 128GB memory the GPU.)

It runs games fine. The only thing that the relatively small amount of dedicated memory really limits is your ability to play at higher resolutions. Other than that it can play pretty much any recently released game at med settings.
What games specifically would you like to play? -
I want to play games such as Crysis, BioSshock and alike.

The MBP 2.2GHz has 128MB while the 2.4GHz has 256MB - I'm interested in the MBP 2.2GHz has 128MB which is cheaper. -
I really don't think you can run Crysis and Bioshock on the 128mb model with high details and be playable.
Mids to lows, especially on Crysis... -

3dmark06 difference is 3000 vs 4000 for that matter.
And - note that most recent games require 256mb...
Well, on the forum there are comments, that you can more or less play normally on 1280 resolution or lower with 128mb, but on my 256mb mbp I can max everything out on 1440(video overclocked, surely) -
I just got a 2.2ghz MBP, and I've been playing a few games on it and have been generally impressed with the performance. Running in Vista Ultimate, Bioshock runs smoothly at 1280x800 with everything on max except DX10 surfaces. For the most part it is really nice, 30+fps, but you can always take the resolution down a notch if the framerate gets a bit low for you in heavy scenes. I found that it ran great though.
The UT3 demo runs really nicely on similar settings, which makes sense considering they both use the Unreal 3 engine.
Crysis, it took some fiddling but I find that it is memory starved at 1280x800 and above, so I'm playing @ 1024x640, which seems to run smoothly. It is plenty playable with most things set to high, shadows, textures, object detail and volumetric are set to low. It is playable, feels like 20-25fps for the most part. Taking the shaders to 'medium' makes it alot less choppy, and quite nice. I found that running it in DX9 mode (right click on the icon in Games Manager and select "DX9" from the context menu) improves performance a fair bit.
My general rule of thumb so far seems to be that the 8600GT definitely has the horsepower to run alot of games on high settings, but is limited when it comes to resolution due to the 128mb memory of course, so just turn down the res a notch and fiddle with the settings until you're happy with it.
Using the 169.04 drivers from laptopvideo2go, they improve performance immeasurably over the ones Boot Camp installs. :
I haven't tried anything with XP yet, but I might try that either this weekend or next, will post back with results then. -
It should run fine -
yeah i have the 2.2 ghz and run bioshock at 1280x800 pretty much maxed out.

i have same computer. I play Flight simulator 2004 which many know is a very hard game to run on high settings, some max out like clouds and water and with full added traffic so other planes flying around to and i get around 28-30fps which is very good. Too bad fs x is such a ***** to run i would prob get around 7 fps. But you should be fine its still a very powerful laptop
