So I got GTA 4 as a gift and installed it on xp in bootcamp. It actually runs very well and I plan on playing it.
THe thing is, it heats up like crazy and the thing I am scared of is overheating damage. This thing is only 2 days old so I don't want to hurt the insides of it.
I plan on pushing the fans to the maximum 6200 rpm though SMC, then play the game.
Is playing the game like this safe? The heat won't cause anything bad to happen?

-
if it overheats and is damaged, it should be replaced without question.
-
youll probably be fine. if it gets too hot, itll overheat and shut down. Thats how youll know its getting too hot.
-
Don't worry about that, I use to play assassins creed, crysis or warcraft 3, after a while it gets hot but still in the safe temperature.
And if it gets damaged (it should shutdown first), as circa86 said, it should be replaced.
So enjoy your mbp and don't worry about it

I do heavy gaming on my MBP in Vista. Don't mess around manually setting the fans, all you will do is add an annoying step to your gaming regiment. A minute or so after gaming, your fans will be running at max speed anyway. I used to manually set the fans, but they control themselves just fine anyway, it isn't your job to babysit them.
-
That's good to hear-that was the case when I ran Folding @ Home or gamed on a 2007 Macbook Pro...even with Nvidia's reference drivers, the fans still seemed to kick in appropriately.
I'm still nervous though with all those reports of "black screens" where the GPU apparently just stops working. But I guess that's just SOME systems? And if you get a bad one, you send it back for a new one? -
This is true. Unless you manually tweaked your system's fans or graphic card, or did something stupid like blocking up all the vents.
-
I think that those black screens or crashes are only in some systems, I've never had anything like that, even while I'm gaming during hours non-stop. One guy posted here that his mbp crashes with warcraft 3, but as I told you, it just works perfect for me...

The 8600M GT (the GPU in my Macbook Pro) is a faulty GPU by design. Any laptop made with an 8600M GT has a shortened lifespan. If it blows, Nvidia set aside 300 million dollars to pay your OEM to fix your GPU for you. You are not responsible for breaking your GPU, especially if you didn't even overclock.
-
Excellent news! I should probably just bite the bullet...unless I decide I need to wait to see what they do with the 17" model
-
Cooler pads definitely help
-
I'd also add that if your using drivers other than bootcamp or the recent nvidia notebook driver release...fans may not kick in and you may be greeted by a black screen as temps will reach 100c in seconds which will kill your laptop sooner rather than later.

I play GTA IV like crazy on my Unibody 2.53.
It does get hot, and I always set the fans to 6200RPM, but I do use one of those aluminum stands (passive). Like this.
It actually works, the thing gets hot and my computer is pretty cool, it works like a heat dissipation thing. Totally recommend it.
But yeah, you'll be fine. And if the 9600s prove to be faulty as well, Apple will repair them as well.
-
As others have said, the MBP control's the fans nicely and you shouldn't have to worry about it overheating. I play WoW on high settings in Boot Camp for hours on end and I haven't encountered yet (knock on wood) a serious problem.
-
Hmm...so is double the video RAM worth effectively $350 more? (Though that's also with one speed grade faster CPU).
It seems like a rip off, and yet at the same time, I know games are really benefiting from 512MB now, so... -
I can plat GTA 4 without a problem with the 256...
-
I play Dota on mine and it heats up like crazy. The vent get way too hot to touch.
-
Yeah but the previous gen and the unibodies have different ways to dissipate heat I think.
In OSX is is noticeably cooler and when I stop gaming, it cools down within seconds.
I found a good solution though, I put on my winter jacket, and open my window that will drop the room temp to about 10-15 degrees C, which drops the MBP temp down about 10 degrees. -
Err...you're kidding about that, right?
As long as it can handle being run at 100% all the time... -
Nope, dead serious. I don't mind the cold. I take a muscle sedative to stop the shivering and away I go on a mission !!
-
Is that healthy?
-
It's healthy only when I don't pass out.
-
lol I'm only kidding about the whole sedative thing..
But I do open the window to keep the computer cool. -
try putting some ice under it or playing in refrigerator
and,if seriously,try undervolting
-
Haha, I was wondering.
