Sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum.

I recently reformatted my laptop, and lost all my iPod touch applications in the process. I had a few paid apps, and I was hoping someone here knew how to get them back on my computer without re-paying for them. The apps are still on my iPod, but I just want to put them on my computer again in case anything happens to my Touch.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

Does your iTunes account track what you have paid for? I think it may, but I am not certain.

It does, but when I try to download it from the app store again, iTunes warns me that a one-time charge will be added to my credit card, so I'd rather not try it that way.

It's not jailbroken, I just got the 2.0 update.

If you know how, I would jailbreak it, and make backups of the apps.

When you plug in your iPod Touch, a message saying "Transfer Purchases" should pop up. I know for sure, purchased tracks will be transferred, but I haven't tested it with paid iPod Touch applications yet. You can try it out though, there is no harm done by transferring purchases, it merely copies and doesn't move.

That is an absolutely unacceptable answer. Illegally downloading the applications on BitTorrent, if that is what you are implying, is unethical, and illegal. That's like saying "because I dropped my ice cream cone I'll steal one from the store". I'm not blaming the original poster for anything, I'm trying to help him get his applications back as well, but suggesting to illegally download those applications is ridiculous.

It just lets me transfer my purchases, apps and all, over to my laptop and desktop from my iPhone.

Haven't tested it with the Touch, but I assume, as Sam explained it, it would be the same.

People spent time on those apps, they don't want you stealing them.
Unfortunately, this affects paying customers on a rare occasion.

The message didn't pop up, but I did find the "transfer purchases" option in iTunes. Thanks! I was worried that I'd have to re-pay for Super Monkey Ball :).

P.S. Is it rare for someone from the Dell team to post in the Apple forum? :D

Once you copied them over with iTunes, make backups of them - they are in your iTunes library on your hard drive and each app is a separate file you can just make a copy of for safe keeping.

Glad to hear you got your Touch apps back! I reformatted my Mac recently too and forgot to transfer purchases, but thankfully everything I had was free (figures, I'm broke :p), so it was just a matter of re-downloading (and getting a $0.00 bill from iTunes).

No, its not too rare at all :p. I will say, I notice a lot of "foreign teams" posting in Apple will eventually leave, or over time become a part of the Apple team ;).

Incidentally, I was actually this close to buying a Macbook Pro for college. If I had, that logo in my signature would probably be different :p .

Doesn't the App store allow you to re-download for free any app you purchased (free or paid) previously? It pops up with a message saying you've downloaded this before, do you want to do it again free of charge, or along similar lines.

Sorry Sam, it so so rarely that I find myself disagreeing with you but this is one of those rare times. Ethics implies morals and implying one standard of ethics implies one standard of morals. There isn't one. In my mind there is nothing unethical with downloading software using bittorrent or other means (http, ftp etc as all BT is is a transfer system essentially) which has been legally paid for by a consumer who cannot regain access to the use of that software due to an OS, hardware or other 3rd party fault caused by another fiduciary party in order to regain use of that software. If it has been paid for and the manufacturer or publisher cannot provide a consumer with a verified licensed copy of a product paid for and issued on virtual media (the net) I see nothing wrong with re-obtaining use of that property.

In terms of legality it may be 'technically' illegal but I wouldn't want to be the lawyer who attempts to claim that a person was a thief for downloading software they have already paid for which has become unavailable to them, specifically in situations where they are not distributing to others and have no other reason but to regain personal use of that software. Not if I wanted a career that is. In most jurisdictions theft requires not just the act, in this case the downloading from BT etc (the Actus Reas) but also an intent to commit an offence of theft (the guilty mind - Mens Rea) or at least an intent to be in some way dishonest. What KrieGLoCK was suggesting didn't come across as fulfilling those requirements. In reality it is most likely, rather than technically, not theft as people understand it.

IMHO anyone who wants to see unethical behaviour, and in certain circumstances illegal actions, should take a long hard look at Apples methods in conducting their business. I'm not saying this last part at all at you Sam believe me but rather at Apple in that people in glass houses....ya know. Whats gonna happen to people who legitimately purchased software from the Appstore which has since been pulled without explaination? Will Apple honour the purchase by allowing a re-download of the product they have 1st allowed then after the contract was signed with the purchaser decided to break that contract. Really really doubt it. But when your Apple i'm sure you really dont feel that the law or any form of ethics applies to you.

P.S Sorry about gettin all law student on it but ya did use my favourite word, 'illegal' ;). Peace.
