I'm getting a new iPod.
Because, having a 20GB photo is putting me in the mentality of people that still have cell phones from the 80's.
I'm just wondering if I should get the 30GB or, shell out a mear $100 for the 80GB.
They both seem awesome. But the main difference (besides the capacity, of course) is the thickness. The 30GB is about half the thickness of my current iPod, and the 80GB is just a sliver thinner than mine.
I have about 7GB of music on my iTunes, and 1.6 hours of video. But I will be downloading some games (Tetris, Pacman, and Bejeweled). I will probably download more videos and convert some DVDs. Would the 30GB be enough? or should I just go for the 80GB?

The 80GB ipod also has a better therefore thicker battery which would make a fairly big difference when watching videos.
-
That's true. A 6 hour difference is pretty significant.
-
While I am skeptical about Apple's battery claims, more battery life is always better.
Honestly, why does anyone need something that thin? To look cool?
Music is my number one priority, then looks (although product design is still very important).
At the moment, I am conflicted about whether I should get the Zune, get the 80GB iPod, or wait for the new touch screen iPod.
If you ask me which is superior of the two alone, then I must say "go for the 80GB!" -
Ew, why would you even consider the Zune? It's pretty ... BAD!
Don't you love the color choices? I mean, could they have picked anything uglier?
If yore looking at non ipod video/mp3 players, then take a look at say, the creative one.
But I didn't realize the 80 gig was bigger and had a longer lasting battery... definently worth the fairly low rate of 350. -
Honestly, i dont think playing video by ipod is a good idea so far, because the so-called battery life cannot last that long if you turn on video or even juat see pics. it is not so bad if you just listen music. but when you start enjoying videos the battery life is gonna be shrinking down to two more hours or so. That means you'v got to spending time on topping it up after a very short time use, which really bothers user. ipod can bring you nothing than the good looking and huge capacity. I'v got a sony Bean Mp3 player before which was quite good, because it's able to last 50hrs long and you just need to spend 3minutes quickly recharging it or 3hrs for full topup. if you really want to make the vedio protable, 30Gb is far more enough. i just donot think burning your pocket on 80Gb ipod is a good option.
-
From what I heard, the 2.5 hour battery life for video was on the previous gen 30 gig ipod. The battery on teh 80 gig is supposed to be bigger than the 30 gig, plus both have had vast improvements made on their battery life.
I'm still not sure how long they last in video mode now... but I'm sure it's decent. -
Here's a review. In the 6th paragraph it says the 80GB Ipod runs for 21h on audio mode and for 7 hours on video mode. This is enough for at least 2-3 movies.
-
I'm impressed by the video lenght... but 21h for audio? Thats ... okay i guess.
But man, that would be pretty good for a really long plane trip (ie from US to Germany). But it wouldn't be enough... but I guess I'd bring my MBP with a 2nd battery to help out with the boredom.
Or buy myself a Gameboy DS. -
Sorry, I forgot to post a link to the review. Anyway, here it is:

But wait, how does the battery life of the 80gig compare to the 30gig?
-
I'm not 100% sure. I think the audio battery life is similar but the battery life for movies is only about half as long as on the 80gig one.
-
So, in terms of battery life, 80GB sounds better?
-
Yes, the 80gig ipod has much better video battery life but audio battery life is similar to the 30gig one.
-
Oh man.... I got a 60 gig macbook and I can manage myself with it..... I really think 30 gig is more than enough. Battery life.... well.... I wouldn`t pay the difference for that.
-
You wouldn't pay a mear $100 for 50GB of extra space and 7 hours of battery life?
-
Soilbleed well.... gues ure right.... the only thing is that the ipod should be firewire and it would be cool to use it as a hard drive too. I mean, I got an external 250 gig firewire disk. But a portable 80 gig disk with mp3 functions would be nice
-
You can use iPods as external discs. :S
Unless they took that feature out. -
Soilbleed19 I know, but what i mean is that you just drag and drop music files from ur PC and thats it. (Well, you know on my mac the ipod works flawlessly but in PC I would prefer something like.... iPod-iTunes instead of iPod+iTunes lol) Also, on PC there is a file size limit cause of the fat32. You can use MacDrive and format it as HFS+ but thats not an easy solution.
-
As far as I can tell, the drag & drop of MP3's does work. I still haven't retested since the last time this was brought up. But more ipod users tell me they just drag and drop mp3's into the ipod, they don't use itunes.
I'd go for the 80 gig myself. I mean... it's great to store stuff you won't need to access a lot on your laptop. And hey, I don't think it's THAT much more expensive than buying a micro external drive that doens't need seperate power.
Too bad it is only USB. I want the firewire back. -
come on! last time I checked it didnt... well, the ipod doesnt work anymore. It is a nano. well too bad.
-
I agree that it doesn't seem that much more expencive for what you get.
I've been leaning closer and closer to it scince I posted this topic.
And I think I'll go for it.
And I'm used to the USB. I've never used firewire, well, at all. So I don't know what I'm missing.
-
Firewire seems to be about the same when I use it in windows. But in OS X, it feels 2x as fast. Not sure why.
I'm sure it's my imagination, but using my external drive seems a lot faster in OS X using Firewire.
