Does anyone know of a way to make windows in OS X transparent?
For instance, so I can run EyeTV in the background (literally) while browsing the internet.

As far as I know, with Leopard it's still an unknown trick. With Tiger you had a few options though.
Try grabbing Crystal Clear though; http://www.musingsfrommars.org/
It's still beta, it may screw things up, but it might do what you want.
Edit; The download link for the proper version is on the page I linked.. not in the downloads section. -
Oh, and for the record, I could never get Crystal Clear to work... but I'm kinda dumb sometimes and probably overlooked something.
This does work; http://infinite-labs.net/afloat/
But it does not save settings (ie; close a window.. open a new one, and it's opaque again). -

Thanks! I will give it a try.

I gave Afloat a shot and it works in Safari! This really makes TV on your mac so sweet!

I like afloat. Honestly my only peeve with it is that you can't set a default translucency, or have it keep translucency in a new window. I set Transmission and Adium to use it (I know adium has settings for opacity, but it still doesn't cover everything, so it's a nice balance now).
Now if only Firefox could port to Cocoa, I'd be set... The only two GUI apps I have open 24/7 that aren't translucent are Firefox and iTunes.
If you use IRC, you can use X-Chat Aqua, and of course the terminal offers transparency too.
I guess I just love eye candy and effects, and my eyes have no problem with focus, so it's not a distraction.
