See here. This is certainly great news for me, I hated the fact that I would have to go back to gmail.com after a few months and organize my inbox. Now my phone, mail, and gmail.com will all be synced!!
Can I get a hallelujah?!
-
-
I don't see what is different between pop and imap? I haven't changed any settings and I can see pictures that people send me with my pop settings.
What is different? -
With imap, any app you choose to check email it will always be the same as you last saw it. It always gets synced with the server when you make a change.
With pop3, if you delete an email with mail.app, it will still be in the inbox of the server (gmail.com for example) when you go to the website on another computer.
The great thing about imap is it is always synced. So if I am always using Mail to check gmail, maybe tomorrow I won't have access to my laptop, maybe I will use one of the computers at school, when I log in to gmail.com, my inbox and folders will be the same as what I last did the day before in Mail
As opposed to a freakin mess if you have been using Mail a lot and haven't checked your email from gmail.com
-
I never understood the desire for IMAP especially when POP3 satisfied my needs.
But I got to admit I always wondered why (for good reason) IMAP is highly wanted
I look forward to the answer, TIA
-
Why do i not have the IMAP setting?
Edit: guess it's just a matter of waiting.
This is good news though! -
I don't understand, did I answer that up there? imap keeps everywhere you check your email synced. pop3 does not. I guess this is the most obvious reason but It's the only reason I need,,,
It's been rolled out to all users so you might not have it now, maybe you will tomorrow or in the coming days. One tip though, Gmail always rolls out new features first to US users, so if you change your language to english-us, I bet you would see the option for it. -
Already was!
I guess it's just a matter of waiting
-
Aww that sucks. I hate it when I have to wait for a new feature and everybody else has it. Like when I had to wait for the new yahoo mail. I probably was in one of the last server farms to get the final version. Hope that doesn't happen to you!!
-
Sweet!
I always found it super annoying, now its awesome. I use my University email fine since it has imap, and it's so much easier! -
I'm sure i'll be dead last
Seems to be my luck!

2 things:
1. If I am using Mail/other email client that supports IMAP protocol, and I am not connected to the internet, will I be able to read already downloaded email? or does the client have to synch with IMAP gmail server to refresh the email headers? So e.g. will have a black inbox if I am off-line?--stupid question, but I had to ask to be clear.
2. I do not yet have IMAP under my settings tab; and I have set the language to US English.--well, just another wait//all good things take time
tah,
S -
1. I can tell you that at least with Mail, you can read and view attachments of emails that already have been synced/downloaded to your computer. Next time you connect, the server will sync with the latest changes you have made in Mail. So yes, you can see all your mail from your last sync when you are offline, and no it's not a stupid question (i had to check...LOL
)
2. Yeah I guess I was one of the lucky ones, then again, I was one of the first that got invited into the gmail beta when it came out, so maybe that has something to do with it. In case you are wondering what to expect, it's something like this:
-
Apparently some users who did not have the option yet, tried logging out and back in, and it worked. Why don't you give it a try?
-
Nice! I like this, very nice. Free POP3 is good, free IMAP is even better. Props to Google.
Now, Mail application on the iPod Touch please!
-
iMap... that's Apple's new GPS device, right?
Just kidding... -
When I first saw the title of this thread, that's exactly what I thought---so, it got me there!
it is IMAP, not iMap...right?
Good one
-
cool thanks
No suck luck I am afraid.
Good, gosh, I should be working..look at the time...I will catchup with ya guyz later...

Don't have that option yet. Hopefully it'll be in place by the time Leopard gets here.
-
So i just invited myself and my brand new account had IMAP. Ugh, my buddy has it too.
I hate google
-
Just checked, still no IMAP for my GMail yet.
According to Google's GMail blog, IMAP rollout should be complete in the next few days. -
The whole world in your pocket!

Same here. I'm so impatient.

as my uncle says, "instant gratification is not soon enough" -
That's pretty much how it feels. Nevermind the fact that I didn't particularly mind not having IMAP before it was announced, but now that it's out there and I don't have it yet it really bugs me. POP isn't worth using, in my opinion, and I like the gmail web interface fine, but I'm really itching to see if Thunderbird or Outlook fits what I want / need a bit more.
-
wow you guys still dont have it. That sucks.
*feels warm with cushy imap blanket* -
Oh, you got it, Fez?
I still don't have it yet. No rush really, though. -
this makes it hard, dialed into my companies VPN (T-Mobile) pop3 is blocked so I couldn't use Outlook for either of my accounts (one personal, one a help desk for my specific line of work).
I am hoping IMAP will not be blocked because outlook makes my life a lot easier. However right now it is only included in my personal account...not the help desk account
-
I keep logging into my Gmail account every hour to see if it's there yet... still nothing, hehe.
-
Got mines sometime between Tuesday night and right now
shouldn't be too long until its implemented! -
sorry to resurrect this thread: I now have IMAP support in gmail. yeah!
-
Yeaps, I got mines sometime a few days ago. I forgot to check for a while and when I checked again it was there
.
-
I had created 3 accounts at different time points (I think about a year part), and they each got IMAP in that order. Google really takes roll-outs very seriously.
Is it my imagination or the web-interface also has received some minor upgrades? There is a option on the right top along the user email and settings to switch to old version/new version? What is that? I did not see any difference moving from one to other? -
Finally, all my GMail accounts have IMAP.
And now I'm giving Mail.app a second chance. Mail.app 3.0 seems to handle IMAP fairly well. -

Does Mail.app handle imap just as good as pop3? On Windows I've seen some email clients struggle with imap.
-
yes, the web interface has received some visual changes, as well as some under the hood. You can check the gmail blog for details.
Mail 2.0 is ok for imap. 3.0 is a lot better at handling imap.
Gmail now supports imap!! Mail.app users rejoice!!
