Hello everyone!
I've been trying to use this Linksys Wireless G Router (Model: WRT54G) since I got my macbook. It was working great for a long time now it's giving out its wireless connection frequently and frankly, it's pissing me off. This router is fast when it works...Does anyone know how to remedy this problem? Suggestions for routers that WORK would be nice too!

How long has it been since you updated the Firmware?
If do don't want a straight G router, I sure like the D-Link DIR-655 N Gigabit Extreme(about $120 on the net, CC)etc. But there are all sort of options, beacuse if you don't want to get N card also, stay w/ a good g router.
Of course since you have a Mac, you might want the Airport Extreme. Both these routers will hit 300mbps on good days w/ compatible cards. -
how do you update the firmware?

Go Here
d/l the updated firmware via a wired pc- don't update the router from a wireless pc
install the firmware through the menu in your router settings
UUUMMMM- just a thought..... Did this router ever work w/ your Mac? If not, it may be the card in the Mac isn't compatible w/ the router -
^Yeah it worked before with his mac.
Anyway I have the netgear wpn 824. It's great, I've had it since may and have never had to reset the connection once. Great range, a/b/g, mimo, blue leds, nice design, etc. Only 50 bucks. -

Based on my experience, here's a couple of ideas:
1) Make sure you are set at 128-bit encryption. We had the same problem with our Linksys G router. AppleCare told me to make sure we were on 128-bit encryption. Something about Apple and Linksys that doesn't work well with less encryption. Didn't make sense to me, but I tried it out of pure desperation... and sure enough, no more dropped connections on our MBP or iMac.
2) A second possibility is that your router could very well be on its last leg. IMHO, Linksys routers are some of the less reliable ones around. We have had to replace two past Linksys routers, each about 18 months apart. They work great for a while , but then you find yourself resetting it every couple of hours. That is a sign that it's time to buy a new router. We're planning on trying Apple's Airport Extreme next time, but I'm not really sure about its performance or reliability. Anything but Linksys for us!
