Buy a 8gb 2nd gen New £169
I know from watching youtube vids that all the refurbs have brand new covers etc and don't look any different so please help me choose![]()

I guess it really comes down to how much data you want to put on it.
I think the 1st gen refurb would be just fine, especially considering there really wasn't that much in terms of improvements between the 1st and 2nd generations.
To me it just seems silly to spend more money for less space.
Hope this helps!
-
apple's refurb always looks new.
-
Do you want a built in speaker? audio input? nike+ volume buttons? If yes then get the second gen if no get the first.
-

Isn't it just a mono speaker anyway?
If that's the case then it's not even worth paying extra for IMO.
-
There's nothing wrong with it only being a mono speaker.......same as the iPhone.
-

What I'm saying is that speakers have to at least be in a stereo configuration in order to get a decent fidelity out of your music...
Personally unless they are stereo I wouldn't even bother using them...
But maybe that's just me.
-
You seem to think the built-in speaker is meant to replace a dedicated home audio setup or something. No, it doesn't have 7.1 surround sound nor does it produce audiophile-quality precise exquisite sound. It's not meant to. The speaker is for those times a friend or two are standing around you and you all want to hear something.
I have the 2nd gen Touch and it's nice to be able to watch things like youtube videos with other people. -
LOL! Like you would totally be able to tell the difference between mono and stereo on something like the iPhone. At least it has a speaker.
-
Then honestly don't bother listening to music through your laptop speakers because they don't project a good enough quality, correct? Really, laptop speakers arent much better than the speaker in the iphone/ipod touch. I mean, if you are out somewhere away from your standard setup and you and a friend both want to listen to music, would you NOT play your music through the laptop speakers? It is the same thing regarding the iPod. I realize I may have come across as harsh, but I assure you I definitely don't mean it.
-
I bought a refurb ipod nano and it had a defective connector from the get-go. It sort of worked for about one week before it gave up the ghost.
.
I did get a replacement (refurb) from an Apple store. This one appears to be fine.
The other negative re refurbs is the shorter warranty. My first refurb only had a bit over a month left on the warranty.

If you want a lot of appstore games, the speaker on the 2nd gen will come in handy. The only problem I have at all with my gen 1 is I need earphones if I want sound for games.
-
Perhaps you need to put the whole thing into perspective and realize that neither the iPhone or the iPod can even be remotely considered a hi-fi sound system......so why bother making them out to seem as such and then frown up on a lowly mono speaker?? Seriously, think about what you're saying!
Yes, it's definitely just you! -
Hmmmmmm...
-
It doesn't matter. Even if they put two speakers on it, they wouldn't be far enough apart to get a real stereo effect.
Any speaker(s) built into a device that size is/are going to suck. I don't think they put it there for music. It could be nice when watching video clips... or maybe to play a little sample of music for your friends I guess, but not to really listen to.
I mostly agree but at least with most laptops the two speakers are at least as far apart as your ears... so you can actually notice the stereo effect. -
Actually the speaker works quite well, so does the side-volume control. And by the way, the new sound chip in the 2nd gen Touch is a definite improvement over the 1st gen touch.
If you like sound quality, the 2nd gen is the only way to go. I blogged about it on my site and linked to a head-fi thread with reviews on the sound quality of the new touches.
I mean, you are buying this for music right? -

ROFLMAO. Wow...
You guys need to lay off for a second and look at this objectively.
I wasn't saying that some people may not like it, but I'm saying that NO mono speaker no matter which company uses it is going to create a good sound quality. And no, I'm not an apple hater or any such thing.
And yes, laptop speakers ARE higher quality because they are not only able to output more sound but they are at least capable of 2.1 (stereo)!
And I understand that you weren't trying to be harsh as you mentioned but really you can't see my side of things?
Well, I hope the OP at least knows what I am getting at if the rest of you don't...
-

Oh, and as for the spacing between speakers, while that IS very important for stereo sound, the fact that each speaker has it's own sounds that it needs to create in stereo instead of one speaker cramming it all out DOES make a difference.
If it didn't make a difference they never would have ever put stereo in Cell Phones! -
We are looking at it objectively and you're completely off your rocker.
For only having a Mono speaker, my MacBook Air sounds pretty good.
This statement is absolute garbage. Just because you have stereo speakers, it doesn't automatically mean they're "higher quality" than a comparable mono speaker.
We all know what you're getting at.......so please re-read my "rocker" comment above. -
Guys lets chill out in here, and concentrate on helping the OP. Thanks!
Johnny T -
I say 16gb first gen for more space
-
Thank you Johnny T! You guys just need to accept each others opinions and forget about it. =)
-
If you do any running at all, get the 2nd gen.

Thanks Johnny T I wasn't trying to make a flame battle, I just wanted everyone to at least CONSIDER the validiity of what I was saying, not to necessarily agree but at least be open minded...
Oh, and to Khris, if you have more to say on the topic please PM me... -
I am all ears and eyes you know,
Sorry you confused me, why?
And yes I was away yesterday and have just checked back. I'm kind of edging towards the 2nd Gen atm, But i'm gonna need to budget in an invisible sheild + iTunes card which makes me go towards the 16gb 1st. -
The 2nd gen ipod touch comes with the nike + sensor built-in, and it's the only ipod (besides the nano) to support it. The kit is not supported with the iphone, first gen ipod touch or any other ipod, you can only use it with the nano or with the 2nd gen ipod touch.
With the nano you need the receiver and the sensor inside your shoe, but with the 2nd gen touch you only need the sensor for your shoe since its built in on the device. The interface on the touch is much better and if you use an armband to run the screen will autorotate when you want to look at your stats, its pretty awesome. So yeah, if you run, get the 2nd gen. -
How long do you guys think it will be before there are refurbished 2nd gen ipod touch's ?
-
About the invisible shield - I had it on my ipod and it was not a fun experience.
If you don't get the invisible shield on the ipod touch PERFECTLY, it will start getting lint caught in the seams whenever you put it in your pocket. Also it makes using the screen a tad but unpleasant becuase your finger does not glide like it would without the invisible shield.
I'd actually recommend getting a clear hard plastic case instead. They are cheaper than the invisible shield too. -
I have to completely disagree with you. I've had no problems with the Invisible Shield on my iPhone with regards to lint collecting, and I have no problems with sliding my finger on the screen. I put my iPhone side by side with a naked iPhone and I can find no discernible different in screen "drag".
The problem with hard cases besides being bulky, is they get dirt and debris trapped under the case and will end up causing damage to your iPhone. They're cheaper for a reason. -
Khris - I'm just stating my experience with the invisible shield.
I think I didn't align the front cover perfectly with the screen so there was a small portion of the cover naked allowing for lint to get stuck in between the ipod and the screen protector.
And about the "drag" it's not much, but can be a pain when you're trying to pla some games, or trying to change the position of a movie. I got so used to the invisible shield, that when I took it off, I was having a hard time tapping/clicking for a few minutes. -
I understand that.......and I was sharing my own personal experience on the same topic. Notice I said that I disagreed with you, not that you were wrong.
-
Pretty much decided on the new 8gb touch, any idea's on the fastest reputable retailer, Apple is taking 3-5 business to ship + delivery time, I want somewhere with like next day dispatch and shipping. I'm willing to pay a £5 extra for it.
Any ideaS?
