When I click on a link to download a file or click on a link to load a picture, a new safari windows pop up. Is there any way so it opens in a new tab in the current safari?

Go to prefs (Command+ ,)select Tabs, enable Tab-browsing. Then Command-clicking should open links in a new tab. Unfortunately, this doens't seem to work always (opening links from my Gmail account for example doesn't work). Together with the lack of ad-blocking this is the main reason Firefox is my main browser, although Safari is so much quicker.
