I just reinstalled MAC OS X sucessfully on my 13 inch MACBOOK PRO
but whenever I try to install the Applications Install DVD it just does not work.
I get this message: installation failed

    An unknown installation error occured!
    Contact software manufacturer.

    What could be the cause?
    How do I get help?
Can these applications be downloaded from apple?

My guess is an unknown error. Probably best to contact the manufacturer.

(Or you could go to a third-party website and ask a total stranger who is likely sitting in a basement somewhere with nothing but underwear on.) :D :D

Unfortunately, as far as I am aware, you cannot download those programs from Apple. Some can be downloaded for free but others, mainly the ones in the iLife suite (GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto, etc.) are not free to download.

This would be an issue that you need to contact Apple for as the instructed by the error message. You can even take your Mac down to your local Apple Store (or authorized Apple service store), show them the problem, and see what they can do about it. Otherwise you will have to put up with Apple's phone/e-mail tech support.

This is too late to stop your trip to Norfolk : ) but I hope the Genius said this instead of selling you more discs:

It has to do with a certificate being out of date. I had to do just this and hit the same problem (and found this thread while Googling for the answer) The solution is to uncheck the auto setting of the clock in the Date and Time system pref and set the date back. I changed it to Sept of '09 and the installation then went fine. Then simply change the clock back.

Thank you jland, your post of January 14th, 2013 in regards to the out of date certificate issue while trying to install the Applications DVD on a MacBook Pro, you really saved my butt on this. I was starting to pull my hair out and wonder what the heck had happened to my Mac! I had just finished installing a 2Tb Seagate hard drive as well as an OWC 16GB RAM kit and when I went to reinstall the original software I started to get the "An unknown installation error occurred!" so thanks again! Whew!!!
