Does anyone know if you will finally be able to hide or disable the dock in Snow Leopard? I mean hide as in, it doesn't pop up if you're mouse is in that area of the screen.![]()
-
you mean-disable dock?
-
Yeah.
Or even just hide it permanently, from within OS X. -
Isn't the whole UI based around the dock concept? I don't think they will ever give to option to disable it as would be the same as disabling the taskbar in windows. Sure you can get buy just using the terminal but the os just isn't really usable anymore...
-
Well, I don't mind shortcuts (sorry, aliases) to the desktop, but especially when I'm in Safari/Firefox I'm annoyed that the dock takes the whole bottom of the screen. I already have it pretty small, but it just sticks out like a soar thumb IMHO.
I already have shortcuts to everything I mostly use on the desktop. -
what about putting it on the left "wall"+hiding?
-
I've tried that, but it's still "there". It just bugs me.
And if I brush the left side, it pops up.
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Usually the pointer has to get really close to the screen bottom before my dock pops up, and I can't remember whether the Preferences allows you to set a time or sensitivity to the popup (i.e. Stardock on PC).
I also prefer to keep the extra lower real-estate from being eaten by the dock and have set it to hide, and I just keep the mouse away from the lower edge when running Safari/FFox and use trackpad gestures to navigate along with clicking on the menu/bookmark bar

left side dock + hiding ftw.
its good to have access to a list of running programs at least. otherwise it would be difficult to quit a set of apps at once, for example...
or to survey what you have running, etc. -
Hmm, good point masterchef, but I prefer activity monitor to monitor and close processes.
-
I don't see how it can be that big of a problem, I can get it really small. Look at the mouse for comparison.
-
Maybe I'm just being picky.
I just hope it could be some kind of option in SL, but like others said, I'm pretty doubtful it will happen.
-
Don't see how its a problem either, but to each his own. This might work...never tried it myself. DockBlock
Also I know that Tinkertool allows you to place the dock at the top and there is a very small area which reacts to the mouseover. -
Yeah, that's never going to happen...
How about if you just hide it? How often do you brush your mouse against the bottom of the screen? -
You could just use this as a excuse to get a bigger external screen
-
Heh. Since it's basically being used as a desktop, that might be an option.
-
I do not understand why people are being so freak about the dock. I love it and I can not live without it.
-
That's you.
-
That is what I do as well. Permanent dock takes away a good chunk of screen real estate.
-
I'll have to see if I can get used to that, but I have to admit it's pretty nice so far.

so, to quit applications you end their processes?
this isn't the iphone, and applications aren't mandated to be designed to have their processes killed willy nilly. you should at least make a valid attempt to let programs close themselves, and use force quitting or process killing as a last resort. -
The dock is so nice.... quick links ot apps, folder pop ups, stacks (making custom stacks rocks) ... dunno how I'd live without the dock
-
^Don't say that! or they will charge you another 10$ to enable dock
