Have you tried them?
I've tried iAlertU, didn't find it that useful though. Maybe if you life in a rough neighborhood where you're bound to have burglars in the middle of the night, and then you set it up when you go to sleep, and it beeps when somebody picks up your computer.
The major flaw of the program is that if I'm a smart burglar, I can just press the power button until the computer is shut down, and then take it, so there's no beeping!

iAlertU is great if it's one of those times when someone wants to be quiet. Most times someone just does a quick grab and run. (Close laptop lid, run like hell)
It may or may not help, but I doubt it will hurt anything. I don't go anywhere without my laptop, so it goes with me to the bathroom, etc.
ETA I do use iAlertU -
SaferSephiroth The calamity from within
Its not like you are paying for it or anything. Doesn't hurt to have it. I have iAlert U and i like it a lot.

I like iAlert U just because my pals at work have PC's, and can't take advantage of motion detecting software!

I like ialertu. It's pretty cool when I'm at a coffee house or something and take a break to the bathroom and the laptop goes beep beep. lol. Everyone looks at me
but i've found it useful. One time I was at a library and went to get some books, on the way back i suddenly heard the alarm and this dude was saying "yeah yeah i just wanted to see it". on the one hand there arent many macbooks in my school, or city, so i can understand the amazement at a white laptop (i always get asked how i painted it white..... ...) but he clearly had ulterior motives cause he was all nervous when i came back.
