I was going to order a new MBP but was wondering how you know if you are getting a Penryn notebook or an old chip one

heres an article if that might help you. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3195 the article talks about the higher end t9500 cpu but i dont know how the numbers and stats will look for the lower end t8xxx series but it should be better than the older memron's (santa rosa) chips.

Well, if you are ordering any MBP above the base model, then it'll be 2.5 GHz, which was not previously offered, so that would be the immediate telltale sign.
If you are ordering the base model MBP, well, you can look at the model number, like th3v0!d said. The previous Core 2 Duos were T7xxx, and the new ones are T8300 for the 2.4 GHz on the new Penryn MBPs.
