First, WOWZA WOWZA WOWZA I am really pleased with my new MBPR.

Ok, that's all done with. ;)

My question is, is there risk of damage to the display when the laptop is closed? My Vaio Z came with a nice cleaning cloth that sat between the keyboard and screen, and I religiously put it in place whenever the screen was closed.

The MBPR came with a piece of foamy paper that is already torn.

Do you all put something between keyboard and display when the laptop is closed? If so, what?

    Thanks!

I thoroughly agree. My screen protector from ShaggyMac has been serving me very well. I have 2 actually, one for my Alienware and one for my MBP and they've been amazing. I travel for work every single week and I put my MBP through airport security every week with the screen protector in place.

    Here's a 10% off coupon code I found using google: RMN1012

I'm a bit curious about all of this. Without a protector, do the screens get scratched by the keys?

It's possible, if the lid gets smashed hard in a backpack or something. Rather then scratches though, it could mare the display with oils or simple dust on the keys. The screen protector is just a good investment to make. Also, I use mine to wipe down the display when needed. Peace of mind is priceless. For $20 it's worth it. Search for coupons, you can usually find a 10% off coupon on the ShaggyMac.

I never get any stains or anything in my MB 13", I don't think putting a cloth helps at all.

My foamy screen protector that comes from apple still is in one piece, so I haven't have had any scratches etc on my screen though it is a matte screen. I basically use my cloth to clean up the keys after each use, though I am wondering if I should just get a key protector instead.

About 3~ years back I owned an MSI gaming laptop and paid around 1,300$ for it. I was on my 3rd commute to campus and when I pulled it out of my bag, I noticed that there was a 1.5" scratch from the keyboard. I was completely shocked as I did not carry any textbooks ...just a mouse and I'm VERY careful not to bump the bag.

Since that very day, I've been using a ShaggyMac with all my commutes.

Even if the laptop you currently have has sufficient elevated rubber protectors around the screen, all it takes is some unwanted pressure or an accidental bump and there goes your beautiful screen. It's just not worth the risk - a protector cloth should be mandatory with every laptop in my opinion (especially the expensive retina display! - I would seriously cry).

It's not gorilla glass..my friend's MBP got scratched because of sand got between his lcd and cloth, and he thought the cloth would keep it nice and protect it from dirt and stuf..
