I might be purchasing a macbook (2.0 Ghz), and I want 2 gigs of ram. The apple website, however, offers only 2 x 514, or the super expensive 2 x 1.0 GB RAMS. I want the 2 x 1.0 GB, but not at $180. I can get it for way cheaper on newegg.com or outpost.com. If it has 4 memory slots, then perfect, I'll just throw a gig in addition to the 2x514. If it has only 2 slots, then I'm not sure what to do.

It has 2 slots under the battery. For 2GB you need 2*1GB sticks.

Damn, that sucks. Do you think I can argue with them over the phone to include only one 1.0gig ram instead of 2x514?

Probably not...most companies are not in a position to honor requests when all this stuff just rolls off of an assembly line anyway.

I don't know of any laptop that has 4 memory slots. And there is no use in arguing, they offer you two options. It's not the end of the world, you would want 2 of the same exact sticks anyway, and this way if you get the RAM from Newegg you will have some backup RAM for diagnosis and such.

Yeah, plus the 1 gigs can be so cheap now that it's ok. I can either hold the 514s as backup or sell em on ebay.
I can have a 514 and a 1 gig running though, right? Doesn't have to be identical?

Yes 512 and 1 gig are fine, you only need identical sticks for dual channel.

Speed I believe is the only advantage, and it is not a significant boost.

I believe that the newer Intel chipsets allow you to run different size memory modules in dual channel, so that they don't have to be identical. I know they use it on their desktop boards, but I'm not sure about the mobile ones.

you figure you can get the 2gb from Apple for $180 or get the 512 setup and get 2x1gb from newegg. for about $60 a piece right? so you figure about $120-$140 give or take maybe a little more. so you are saving a little, of course you would probably save more if they did offer 1gb but that isn't going to happen, maybe they would do that at an Apple Retail store but I doubt it.

No I think I'll be getting a 1gig setup (2x514), taking a 514 out (ebay?!) and throwing a gig in from newegg. I think 1.5gig for RAM should be more than enough to run OS X (and eventually the leopard version) and a boot camp (Vista).
