I decided to go ahead an order a refurbished Mac Book Pro for $1,599. I assumed it would come with only one stick of 512mb memory, so I order 1gb from Newegg for $85. My Mac Book Pro came in today and I was suprised to see it came with 1gb of memory (two 512mb sticks). It seems like a mistake on Apple's part. It's too late to cancel my order from Newegg, but I was wondering is it possible to use the 1gb I ordered.

Alternatively, I think I could sell the two 512mb sticks of memory for $100 and buy another 1gb stick for $85.

    What would be your advice?

I would sell the two 512 sticks and buy another 1GB. Running closely matched pairs of the same size and manufacture will always yield better performance.

Since the MBP has a discrete video card running in dual channel mode doesn't really net much of a performance increase. Still I would go for 2 GB of RAM. You shouldn't have any RAM issues for a little while. :)

Strange... not only did I get more memory than I ordered but the hardrive is much better than anticipated. I thought I would receive a Sata 80Gb hardrive running at 5400 rpm and instead I get a Sata 100Gb hardrive running at 7200 rpm.

I think I love Apple! Is it common for the company to provide better hardware in refurbished machines?

Apple is usually cool with purchases. If you buy a product that is about to be updated, they'll often let you exchange your purchase for the updated product. Likewise, if your purchase hasn't shipped out yet then they'll upgrade you for free without even asking.

After noticing the numerous legal claims against Apple products recently, I've noticed either: people like to complain or Apple treats just potential customer well. I'd guess that it's a mixture of the two.

I'd definately sell the 512mb ram sticks on ebay to pick up another 1gb (the exact model as your other one) from Newegg. I think 2gb is the max the MBP supports (assuming 1gb per slot...I don't think future 2gb dimms will work), so you'll be set memory-wise for the life of your laptop.

I looked at Ebay and it doesn't seem like the greatest place to sell laptop memory. I checked the category for the MacBook Pro memory class and nothing was really selling.

Any suggestions on where to sell it?

BTW, thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Edit: I'm so blind. I could just use the forum's "buy, sell, and trade" subforum.
