I think you need to have POP enabled with the external email provider and forward the mail to your .Mac account. Do you have the account set up like this? What is the external provider?

EDIT: Also see this article, Check one POP email account via .Mac's webmail. I don't have .Mac, so I'm really not sure.

This is what I get from the help menu. I've done everything that they wanted to but still not able to get into my gmail account in .Mac mail?

    Checking a second email account

You can use .Mac Mail on the web to check a separate POP email account in addition to your .Mac Mail account.
To receive mail from an external POP account:

    1. If you're not already using .Mac Mail on the web, go to www.mac.com, click Mail (at the top of the page), and then log in.
    2. Click the Preferences link in the upper-right corner.
    3. Click the Other button.
    4. Select the checkbox next to "Check mail from an external POP account," then type the account's email address, mail server name, and user name and password in the text fields provided.
    5. Choose an option from the Destination Folder pop-up menu.
    6. Select the checkbox next to "Leave Messages on server" if you want to leave the original messages on the POP host server so you can still read them when you access the account directly.
    7. Click Save at the bottom of the Other pane.

After you have configured an external POP account, a link to check mail for this account will appear below your folders in the left pane of .Mac Mail. When you click this link, any new messages the account has received are delivered to the .Mac Mail destination folder you specified.

Have you configured your GMail account for POP access? Login to the GMail account and click Settings, then click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab. Make sure that POP is enabled. Make sure you click Save Changes. And if it still doesn't work, type your .Mac address into the Forwarding textbox in GMail. Also, what did you enter for the Mail Server in .Mac? I believe it should be pop.gmail.com.

Yes I have enabled POP for Gmail, because I can check my Gmail account in Apple mail. What should I put in for incoming mail server?

    pop.gmail.com is the incoming server.

OK I signed up for the .Mac Trial. I couldn't get the External POP Account to work either. I get this error message every time I check the POP Account in .Mac Mail. I used pop.gmail.com as the incoming mail server.

However, I was able to get my GMail messages in my .Mac Mail account by forwarding them. Just login to your GMail Account, choose Settings, then the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab, click the "Forward a copy of incoming mail to" button and enter your .Mac email Address. Click Save Changes. Your GMail Account will forward everything to your .Mac Account. It works. And you can Add Filters in GMail.

EDIT: I also found an explanation in the Apple Support Forum,
