you cannot... but if you have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor plugged in, it will wake back up without having to open the screen, and work fine.

As previously pointed out, it can't be disabled. Apple does offer something called clamshell operation which was detailed by doh (and it also requires an external monitor) but that is it. It just looks like you had some type of glitch, it happens. OS X has its fair share of bugs just like any other OS and some show their ugly heads every once in a while.

I believe a program called Smart Sleep will help. Since getting the MBP for my wife she tends to just close the lid because she is used to the notebooks going into hibernation.

Nope. I have it, and it only eliminates the timed sleeep due to keyboard/trackpad inactivity. Don't get me wrong, it's a great little tool that I use quite often. Good when watching a video when on battery.

InsomniaX might do it. Works for me under Snow Leopard.

Doze allegedly also prevents sleep, even with lid closed. Sleepless should do it, though not sure which benefits it brings for the $9-10 price tag.

I have heard that MBP uses the keyboard area for an air intake, which could make things get hot if it stays awake while shut.

I think caffeine doesn't work for the lid closing. I remember reading an article that said apple didn't want any laptops frying in backpacks.
