OK, I know if I go to my HDD I can see everything... but my question is.

When you click on the finder from the dock, it gives you the "All my files" view and favorites.

I can't seem to navigate to the root of the HDD from this view.

Am I not seeing something? Is there a way to add the Mac HDD to the favorites list?

yeah... this is pretty stupid defaults

go in Finder to Preferences, and under Sidebar and checkmark the things you want to show.

I am not sure why Apple took that off by default in Lion. They even stopped external hard drives, thumb drives, and internal/external optical discs from showing up on the desktop by default. Those too have to be enabled through the Finder preferences. I think this is an example of a company trying so hard to make things simple that they actually only further complicate the matter.
