Ok I bought Leopard from my school bookstore today and came home to do a fresh install. The only problem is first it reported the disc was dirty, so I cleaned it and went to reinstall. I came home from being ouit and it said there was an error installing the Epson printer driver. So now I've got a wiped clean MacBook and more than likely no way of getting a refund because they dont take back open software. Any tips?

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
are you planning on using the driver? if not reformat the whole drive and just leave out the drivers.
-
are the discs clean?
id try again. they may not take back open software, but if there is a problem with the disks, id go talk to them. They can give you an exchange if needed.
if they say they cant, they either dont know how, or dont really care enough to. But they can. If they say no, ask for their boss.
id bet a retry would probably work though
you can even do a minimal install, and hit epson.com up for the drivers, or try the install discs after leopard is booted. you can install them from there too -
Dumb question, perhaps, but did you try again to install the OS? If not, I'd give it another shot, and stay with it as it goes. Perhaps you need to click on something or other during the install process (I don't know; I haven't updated). If you have no luck, wait for Sam to come to the rescue. Actually, I'm surprised he hasn't already posted. Good luck.
-
I don't need the drivers, but I didn't see anywhere to exclude certain options, just hard drive formatting options.
-
Sam doesn't have Leopard which maybe why he hasn't come through but I guess in terms of the OP's situation it doesn't matter which version of OS.
-
Scratch that guys, the disk is fubar'd. It's basically disintegrating.
-
Okay, whatever Fubar'd means and how is it disintegrating?
-
There are slivers of it coming off, it's worse than it was when I opened the package. When I opened it it had these spots on it , now there are thin strips peeling off the disk.
-
If I try to do an upgrade and it fails will it revert back to Tiger for me?
-
I'd take that DVD back and exchange it. They should give you an exact exchange if it's defective.
-
I wouldn't risk the disk drive with DVD that is crumbling... don't even try to put the disk back in if its disintigrating. You have a strong case for an exchange, or a refund even.
-
STOP using the disk or you may risk damaging your optical drive, you shouldn't have a problem getting it exchanged for a proper one, that is very odd, I have never heard of that happening before.
-
Where did you get your copy of Leopard from anyways?
That is extremely weird. I've had dozens of burned DVDs come into contact with various bad things (Chemicals, heat, etc) and none have done that. -
Good advice (I just spent a couple of hours replacing a drive in an old desktop with one from another slightly newer machine and didn't know about master/slave jumpers . . . LOL).
I don't think a request for a refund, given the circumstances, will be turned down, DITTON, open package or not. Just explain politely and I think you'll be fine. Again, I wish you well. -
I got it from my schools bookstore/computer store. I hope you guys are right, either way Apple would help me out right?
-
First try going to the school's bookstore to get a refund. Do you have your store receipt with you? That will help out tremendously.
-
Be sure to take as many of the remaining bits and pieces of your disk as possible, too.
-
Sweet, thanks guys! I'm going to call Apple tommorrow, and then I'll swing by the bookstore. I'll let you all know how it worked out.
-
yep, make sure to report back and feel free to post any other questions you have, and feel free to post comments and never be afraid to make a post about being happy with a product.
-
Ok guys, I went back to the computer store and they said no way. They told me to goto the Apple Store and they said they couldnt replace it because its a different part number from the ones they sell. So I called Apple, and customer support was very helpful and they are shipping me out a new copy. So lesson learned: Buy directly from Apple!

Good stuff! Glad things worked out in the end.
Huge Leopard Install Problem!
