I was just using I Movie 2008 and it is so frustrating I had to throw my mbp in bootcamp and use microsoft movie maker. Most apple software i enjoy but this is just terrible. They try to make it to easy and to basic that nothing other than boring stuff can be done. You cant make an actual good video on it no matter what. I cant believe they didn't put a time bar thing on it. It just has so many flaws. I use final cut pro at school and love it but not ready to drop that money for it. What are some good cheap/free alternatives?

Have you tried iMovie HD 6? You can download it from Apple's site if you have iLife '08...

Well at least they offer it for free, since they probably understand 08 was sub-par. Now if you had to buy iLife 06 to get it.... THAT would be horrible.

(BTW thanks for the link, I was looking into downloading it also ;) )

you could make a great film with no editing what so ever if you know what you are doing.

iMovie 08 is fantastic for what it was designed for, people that have no experience with a timeline based editing program, and just want to jump into it.

you can easily make very decent things with iMovie 08, just as easily if not way easier than every thing iMovie 06 can do.

Still, you may want to edit for finishing touches and small effects. Depends on the project at hand. I know I would be irritated if there were no time bar. There should at least be an option for one that you can turn on/off depending on preference, but I cannot see why you would ever want it off...

iMovie 08 is simply a different tool, that is fine, nothing wrong with that, as it has the functions needed to do basic in/out editing with transitions, etc.

I agree that timelines are definitely the way to go for more advanced work, but I am not going to stop Apple from trying something new.

and iMovie 08 introduced some pretty damn cool things, the ability to look through clips by scrolling through them is brilliant, and is something that would be fantastic to see in even the expensive Pro Apps, I know it would definitely speed up my Final Cut Pro workflow.

Yeah, Final Cut Express is a really good option considering its only $200 and is really powerful.

I guess with iMovie '08, Apple brought it back to what it was originally supposed to be...a fast, easy-to-understand movie editor. iMovie HD 6 has gotten so complicated, its powerful for a free program but hard to understand right off the start. With iMovie '08, the audience that will use it most will easily understand it, while Apple expects the ones demanding more to go to Final Cut Express now.

iMovie 08 was targeted to people like myself. I have some home movies that needed to be edited and converted to DVD. I have zero desire to invest any time into learning video editing at this point. iMovie 08 fit my needs perfectly. It was a hundred times easier to pick up and use than iMovie 06.

Something else people forget, iMovie 08 is a complete rewrite from scratch. So, some things like the timeline will likely make their way back in. The problem was iMovie had gotten way to complicated for people who did not want to learn it. Also, it likely was eating into Final Cut Express sales.

iMovie 08 definitely works as intended. Assuming I wanted to add some custom subtitles to a video though, how would I do that? iMovie 08 doesn't have a custom enough text editor for me to get the right size text to the right places...
