Not trying to flame but I think there's two sides to every coin and I just want to know some negatives about going Apple if any. Particularly MBP.
1. A lot of heat on the palm rest on a MBP 15" I tested in-store (is this normal?)
-
normal for all laptops
-
trueintentions Notebook Evangelist
2. It gets really greasy.
But that's to be expected with the Black Macbook. x)
-
3. It scratches easily (white MacBook) and dents (MBP) if not taken care of properly.
-
Just to answer your question, I find in-store Macs get a lot warmer than they actually are in normal use.
4. It could be thinner
.
-
5. The keyboard could be better built on the MBP, like the 13.3-inch MB or Sony Vaio CR series. I tried those keyboards out and was immediately comfortable using them.
In answer to #1, the palm rests do get warm when doing heavy stuff. Its because the MBP uses more of a passive cooling system. Its largely due to its very thin form factor where it's hard to fit in a decently sized fan to cool it off. Also, the aluminum chassis has something to do with it as well. Its ok for it to be warm. -
I don't dislike my Mac. What I don't like, is that my son and gf borrow it a lot. Each of them have Macs, but they're not MBP's. Sometimes my notebook is much handier for them than using their own machines. I suppose that applies to everyone who doesn't own a desktop.
The only real issues I have with my Mac is that I don't like that pages must sometimes be manually maximized, and occasionally I run across files in emails from friends with PC's which are difficult to open. I don't spend much time trying to correct that issue; I'm so lazy I usually just fire up a PC when that happens. LOL -
Hardly. Neither of the two laptops I use daily get warm in the palm rests area. Not normal at all for "all laptops." -
My asus and acer both do not get warm, even after a couple hours of gaming. Now they do get hot, but at other parts. I agree with dbam, they are awkward. And With bmwrob, I find that the application base allows for better functionality with my windows, as with mac there is VERY limited apps for simple tasks.
-
it isn't made of dry carbon fiber ^_^
-
Hmm, even after gaming for a while the palm rests on my MBP only get warm. It's not even close to causing discomfort.
-
6) Because when people walk past my computer room and see my iMac on the desk, I get "OOOOOOO you have a Mac!" and they want to go in and mess with it
-
Um... lets see...
7) The battery's life span is short.
8) my headphone jack... doesn't work so well anymore (thats a problem for any of the small headphone jacks for me)
9) PITA to replace the hard drive, not that hard to do, but still...
You guys are crazy for not liking the keyboard. Best I've ever used, and thats comparing it to IBM Thinkpads and some others. -
10) People think you're loaded or spoiled for owning a MBP.
And the palm rest gets SLIGHTLY warm, because there's a hard drive under the left rest, so if it's constantly reading it does get warm. But I actually find it more comfortable when it's warm because i think touching cold metal is more uncomfortable. As for overall heat, it does get very hot near the hinge when gaming, or doing anything taxing, but this is completely normal on performance laptops now adays. -
11) Not having a delete key (apple... thats a backspace key, not a delete key!)
-
This is VERY true - especially when I have my company-issued MBP at home if I'm on-call for work
-
Wait... that's true or that's true? Which part is the true part? The fact that we're rich and spoiled, or the fact that it happens?
-
Umm, no HD activity light? More afraid it'll be stolen? Coming up short here...
-
12) The metal case is about a quarter millimeter higher than the plasic edge, so it's not perfectly flush.
13) Since I have a 17 Inch, the lid is sort of "warped" I guess. It appears to be raised higher on the 2 ends while closed, than it is raised in the center. Very slight ^^ -
I have to say BOTH!
-
14) keyboard/trackpad freezing issues that I can't seem to resolve (however not too many people seem to be having this problem)
15) Using my mbp as a laptop poses a hazard to my manly bits
16) smudges on my glossy screen (everyone seems to want to touch it
)
17) noise from the headphone out
18) the part of the case that borders the spacebar is starting to leave a scratch on my screen
19) I wish the screen tilted back a bit further. -
YES! How awesome would a carbon fiber mbp would be! It would rock!
I also don't like how it is so cumbersome to change the hard drive on the mbp, should be at least like the macbook. -
That is totally untrue statement.

I think appearance wise my MBP is the sexiest looking thing out there and I love the appearance of OSX (especially leapord though i havnt upgraded yet).
The only issue i have really is how OSX handles having many applications open and managing them, expose is great most of the time but i still much prefer the windows "start" bar. Im the kind of guy who always has 5-10 windows open at once and it can get really messy on a mac. Hopefully "spaces" will solve this when I upgrade though.
I just find it really confusing on my mac trying to use "close window" "hide" "minimise" and everything else. I think its possibly the only thing OSX could improve on over windows. But maybe its just me. -
Its a good idea to get used to keyboard shortcuts, they'll help you out.
Command (Apple) + Q quits the application, Command + W closes the window, Command + H hides the window (it doesn't even go to the dock, its just hidden; to open it again, press on the application's icon or use Expose). -
Double click the windows top bar and it minimizes to your dock... almost exactly like windows
-
##) Its LED selection can get a bit monotonous.
After staring at the white/silver lights for ages, I almost start wishing that it had a few more buttons with different colored LED lights underneath (blue maybe?). Or it could have ports that have lights that change color too...
I've even deliberately turned on my Numlock and Capslock keys when I'm not using the keyboard just to have a little more color sometimes
-
LOL! That's funny...I think I'll do that now
.
-
Cut and paste. Re-sizing windows from all edges. A better web browser (FF 3.0 will probably be that browser).
-
Well, I've used Minefield, and it's not that great, so don't get your hopes up for the better browser just yet unfortunately.
I'm actually hoping for a nonincremental OmniWeb release sometime this year - but I doubt that would happen. -
I don't like the fact that there is no toughMac laptop. I could never take a Macbook into work, or it'd get destroyed in minutes.
If they made something that could endure what my Toughbook CF-28 does, then I wouldn't have a machine with Windows on it. All my desktops have always been Macs since I bought my first one in 1995, and they are what I've always had access to since 1987...
But until the Macbook Pro can let me throw it, drive over it with my car, and dump gallons of water on it while it's on, and include a touchscreen, I'm gonna have to use this thing. -

What do u do for a living? Work at a construction site? And yea I don't think Macs will ever be built for durability like the Toughbook. It ruins the whole sexy stylish image. -
Do you surf the Net while driving in Demolition Derbies??
-
I work in a machine shop. It's pretty rough in there on my phone which stays in the toolbox in a drawer... let alone in something I'd have out in the open.
I know they'll never make one, but it's always nice to dream
Agreed though that Mac's have a nicer style that will always look attractive. My toughbook just makes people say "What the HELL!?" because of it's looks.
-
I thought you didn't have any notebook before, M1530?
-
No he is to busy driving the people nuts in the otehr forum about which notebook to buy. LOL.
-
MY Mac? did you read the title of this thread?
-
I think we're at 20?
20: It's too fragile. I just feel it could be damaged easily. Too easily. -
While I understand your post reflects the title of this thread as I see it, your reasons for hating your Mac are your fault.
Overpriced? You bought it.
Not enough unique features? Did you do your homework before buying? -
21) It's difficult to replace the HDD on MBP, require to apart and more careful with parts, it's successful to did that.
22) MacBook has no dedicated graphic chipset but just crappy Intel GMA, unlike iBook does. -
#22 is not a "Mac" only thing. Intel GMA is the most widely used video card on the planet. Every single notebook vendor uses it and probably in most of their models. Only higher end notebooks come with dedicated video cards. I would bet the dedicated video card/notebook market is less than 20%.
There is zero reason to have more than a Intel GMA 950/x3100 if you dont play video games on your PC. -
I know but I can careless about Intel GMA on PC than Mac does.
In back in years ago, iBook has dedicated graphic chipset and that's usually take advantage of OS X Leopard (expose, core image), graphic, film, graphic or other programs that runs better on dedicated graphic chipset, now, Apple has put Intel GMA on MacBook and that's turn me off, some people has problem with expose or space on Leopard, that I found from other forum.
In my opinion, I just want MacBook to have dedicated graphic chipset (HD 2400, HD 2600 without XT or PRO) and make looks more worth than other PC does and would take full advantage of Leopard (such as expose, space) and other applications that require graphic usage. It would allowed consumers to have some benefits for games or graphic programs and make Apple looks more worth than other PC companies.
Some consumers are made mistake to bought MacBook for games and they found that is not sufficient graphic chipset for games then end up to return at store or exchange into MBP. Only point about MacBook is consumer product, that needed add dedicated graphic chipset to allowing more choice to do and reduce of confusion.
That's just my opinion. -
Well, the Macbook is THE low end casual consumer line of Macs. If you need a high end machine you get a MBP. Sort of like the Mac Mini vs the iMac. IMO if you buy a computer without knowing what's in it, you deserve to be mislead in thinking you can play new games with it. Not that Apple misleads, since they have a specs section on their Macbook section of the website. If you want a dedicated card, you buy a MBP. Just like if you want a desktop with a dedicated card you buy an iMac, not a Mac Mini.
-
I always read on spec before buy it but I was stated that some consumers don't pay attention to spec and think if MacBook is enough for them.
I own black Alu iMac with HD 2400 XT and MacBook Pro with 8600 GT.
Baseline iMac is used to sell with GMA 950 in last years ago then redesigned and switched to ATI on baseline over Intel GMA. -
And my point is, if they don't pay attention and just make assumptions they shouldn't be buying a computer, and deserve to be surprised when they find out it can't do what they thought it did. Apple isn't hiding anything. I think you are way too sympathetic towards said ignorant people.
-
Well, while I could see an argument for having an option to get dedicated graphics on the MB, anyone who tosses out $1000 for a laptop without taking the time to do even the most basic of research (i.e. what specs does it have) is probably one of the reasons why caveat emptor exists
But along those lines, I do think the lack of configurability and options (i.e. not having an integrated graphics option) is a weakness in many respects of Apple - maybe not from their business standpoint, but certainly from an individual consumer's. -
Yup, I think it need be optional to get dedicated graphic card on MB.
I would doubtful that Apple would do it but I can be wrong if they are switch it in near future. -
Well, I don't mind too much about not having dedicated graphics on my MacBook, but I certainly wouldn't mind if there was an option for it.
And I have another thing that I don't like my Mac about:
23) Lack of default customizations
I mean, there's lots of third-party customizations, but I would prefer if Apple let their customers customize their Mac more. Like the whole semi-transparent Menu Bar issue in Leopard...if Apple allowed its customers to just adjust the opacity to what they liked, then they would satisfy everyone. -
That is true same. Kinda like the ipods. Like the menus and stuff. I know that you can have a certain menu on the home screen like games. The dock is nice in leapord but i do wish that they would have other docks that you could change to and stuff.
-
Yes, I'd like more customization with iPods as well. I mean, I love the iPod interface (iPhone + iPod Touch interface is nicer though, to me), but I'd love more customizability too. Some people might prefer a black background instead of white, and have white text instead of black text, and I'd like for those users to be able to do that.
I don't like my Mac because....
