we understand Apple says that, but just like the Air, the flash SSD module is not built into the motherboard, its on a different card... its proprietary though, so you cannot change it out with just anything you want to. OWC does make some replacements for the Air and the rMBP. This isn't very useful right now, but years from now it could be if you need to upgrade or replace one in an older machine. The RAM is soldered directly on the logic board though.

Is that exactly how it's worded? Damn Apple's getting hard......on customers. :)

I stand corrected with the hard drive it can be replaced it almost looks like an Msata but its not. OWC is the only company that sells an upgrade for the RMBP but for 600 dollars thats alot of coin for a 480 gig drive.

You sure you need a rMBP? Doesn't make any sense baring in mind what your requirements are.

Okay, received the mbpr, so far I am impressed by the battery life and macOs, but it's no surprise that there are barely any software/real games for the operating system. I will be installing windows later to give it another go.

Something did creep up under the radar or prior to making this post

Asus Zenbook U500 . As thin as the MBPr, same internals..no idea about the price, battery life, or weight. I'll be returning the MBPr if the price is 1599 or under.

You dropped over two thousand dollars for an Apple and only afterward discovered that most modern games require Windows? OSX's poor selection of games isn't exactly a tightly-guarded secret.

If gaming is a significant portion of what you're interested in, return it, and buy a PC laptop. Their are quite a few out there, many of which are 1/2 or 2/3s the price of the MBPR. The Vaio S15 and Envy 15 spring to mind. Asus has got a couple thin-and-light models with dedicated GPUs too, but I don't know their lineup very well.

Barely any software for Mac OS?? What?? The Windows devils residing on your left and right shoulders are telling you some misinformation. Many of the newly released popular game titles are available on both Mac OS and Windows (although there will always be more for Windows) and in terms of productivity software....uh haven't looked, let's be honest about it.

Because Batman: Arkham Asylum, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, most Valve releases except the original Half-Life, Driver San Francisco, Torchlight, Bastion, MS Office, Adobe CS, and a laundry list of others aren't "real" products.

    /facepalm

Isn't the recently announced FFXIV is Windows & PS3 only?

I thought he imply that title such as FFXIV isn't popular.

Most non-game software is available for OSX. Gaming is very hit-and-miss. All Blizzard games are in OSX. Borderlands is. The Battlefield and Mass Effect serieses aren't. Equally importantly, many games that are available for OSX are ports that don't run nearly as smoothly as their Windows counterparts (Dragon Age, I'm looking at you). Productivity software (except for industry-specific stuff) isn't really a reason to choose Windows over OSX, but gaming still is.

There are far, far, far more popular games that would have made for a much better example.

Same goes for Valve titles. HL2, Portal, and the like run OK on OS X but are smoother on Windows (though there's not quite enough difference to make want to NOT use OS X for playing them). The one exception is RAGE. The game had all kinds of problems on Windows when using an AMD GPU, but the Mac port runs it just fine. It's not the fastest game in town, but it's more than playable.

No, it's not that much that match both "newly released" and "popular" requirement. It's not like Windows get dozen of new games every week, is it?

There must be some kind of communication barrier here. I'm saying your example of Final Fantasy XIV was a very bad one. The game originally came out in 2010 (so not a new release), and the reboot likely will not be released until Q1 2013.

If you have a high standard about everything, you won't be satisfied with rMBP either because of the common ghost image problem.

Installed boot camp on the macbook pro. Got to say, I am liking windows a lot on this mac. The resolution is crazy! I decided to keep the macbook because I do not think the new asus U500 can give me the amount of resolution as this mac. I have mine set at 125% scaling and chrome at 150% zoom. Everything looks amazing.

I would use macOS more but I am not having a lot of luck with flash. Youtube full screen runs like crap even with HTML trial turned off...so is there anything else I can try? Maybe try google chrome? Youtube is smooth as butter in windows 7.

thats a very rare issue, and Apple has been replacing people's machines that have the problem.

If you go to ifixit's website, they have a complete disassembly of the retina display macbook pro and it can be seen that the ssd is not integrated to the motherboard. Only the memory is integrated. With the removal of a single screw the ssd can be removed and easily swapped out for another.

well if you go the owc way you can have the 256gb ssd + whatever size you buy, its going to be in a usb3 case. I dont think its controller effective, they use a Sf2281
