I was wondering if I could upgrade some of its components
(since this model isn't no spring chicken :D)

    Currently it has:

    256MB RAM
    30GB HDD
    DVD-ROM
AirPort Extreme (Thank God, heard it was pricey back in the day and hard to find now on ebay)
    Mac OS X v10.3 Panther

I understand this machine was built sometime in the early 2000's but I have to say its a novelty using a macintosh (new to me)

    Chances are, yes.

Depending on what model of G4 it is, it can hold up to 1.5 GBs of memory. I believe the G4s had built in memory with 1 open slot available for upgrade.

If you can tell us what processor it is we can figure out the model. But as TSE said, you can almost certainly upgrade the RAM and definitely the hard drive.

Once you replace the hard drive to at least 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, etc... you can install Leopard on it and it should work great. Definitely upgrade the RAM though and you will have a decent "netbook!"

ram max i think is only 1.2gb, 256 built in and 1gb on the slot, then you can definitely up the hdd, probably to 250gb, but i dont suggest you put too much, the processor is definitely on the slow side. go snow leopard if you can

The last Mac Os to support PPC was Leopard.

I don't think anyone mentioned it, but Snow Leopard doesn't work on Power PC!
