Okay, so I have a MBP with 1GB of RAM and I want to bump that up to 2GB, can anyone tell me if it is difficult to do? Also, can someone please suggest where to buy the RAM (like newegg) and maybe a link to the specific RAM they suggest?

    Thanks!
    Mike

Actually I found the info on Apple for installation and I am considering getting 2 GB of RAM from Newegg for $165. Unless I don't need that much.

    Thanks!

It's very easy to install new RAM.

2GB of RAM should be fine..... it will definitely be an improvement over 1GB.

Note that for $165, you can get a 3GB kit from OWC:

Might be overkill, so you can also get a 2GB kit for $97:

EDIT: Just occurred to me you might have a model with a single 1GB stick. In that case, you could get a single 2GB stick for $117:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/5300DDR2S2GB/

Which would give you 3GB total. Or another 1GB stick:

For only $47 to bring you to 2GB.

Eh..what's the difference between a "kit" and just 2 sticks of RAM?

There is no difference. The "kit" just means it is two sticks bundled together.

good job, glad you took the time to keep searching and found it, so many people just won't do that.

2gb should be fine unless you are using any Pro apps like photoshop, finalcutstudio, aperture, shake, maya, etc. and even then, performance will be more than adequate, but these type of apps can definitely use whatever you can throw at them.

but if you can afford it you won't regretting as much as possible.

Does the standard 2GB on the 15" MBP come in 1 DIMM or 2?

That's horrible :p Is there anything different between RAM used in Macs compared to other PCs?

    Just the standard 200-pin DDR2 PC-5300 RAM?

Yeah, pretty much standard stuff...... feel free to buy any Corsair, Crucial, G.Skill, whatever floats your boat.

I've seen 2x2GB kits for around $240 or so (OWC also gives $50 cash back if you send in your old 2x1GB of RAM). Not bad at all if you want to move to 4GB of RAM.
