How much Hard Drive should I set aside?

Depends on what you want to do with it.
I put 20 gigs since I'll be putting 2 games on it plus Oracle Client and Visual Studio. -
If you are going to do gaming you will need atleast 20g -
XP takes about 3GB. Set aside 1GB for virtual memory, and 512Mb just to round things off (temporary files etc). Some things are only installed in the system drive so at the very minimum reserve 7GB for XP itself. Now add whatever apps and games you plan to install. I agree that 20GB is a minimum if you want to do serious work/gaming with XP, but YMMV.
I would recommend nLite; it can trim and customize XP´'s installation, and slipstream SP1 or SP2 on it too. You should know what you are doing since you may end with a non working installation. I used it to install under Parallels; I ended up with XP taking only about 1GB.
::NOTE:: nLite is not XPlite; it is a tool to modify XP/2k installation. You still need an actual XP install disk. -
But 20gb means out of a 60gb hard on a macbook (not to mention the hard disk tax when you buy) there is very less left
I'm having the same problem
the only way is buying an external or internal hard right? -
Soilbleed seems to have a 100GB HDD. For people which have just a 60GB drive, yes, if you set aside 20GB for XP then you won't have much left for OS X. It really depends on what you want to install on XP; reserving 7GB for the system, the 13GB left would be enough for 3 games of ~4GB. If you don't game and don't need to have large amounts of media, than you can use less space, say 10GB... If you want to use XP heavilly with a 60GB HDD, either uninstall every extra that comes with OS X or buy an external HDD as you said. Better yet, upgrade the HDD from the Macbook and put the old one in an enclosing!
I've set up XP under Parallels on just 4GB (by using nLite as I said above), but then I just use some utilities, sometimes to play some media and for the stray site that doesn't work well with Firefox or Safari. -
Sorry to jump in like this, but how much space does OS X need for a full installation?
-
The obvious solution is to install your games on an external hard disk, and set aside less space for WinXP -say 10GB. I run quite a few games this way under XP over a USB2 connection (firewire would be even better), so I dont worry about using up too much laptop hdd space.
-
That is a good idea. Is performance any different? I never thought of that.

Can someone please help me? I've followed manuals by I haven't been able to make a bootable slipstreamed Windows XP SP 2 CD. My CD is named X1APOEM_EN (Windows XP Professional (SP1a) OEM). I'm using the CD that came with my windows computer. So far, I've made 3 coasters...
-
I am afraid OEM XP CDs can't be installed in anything other than the machine they came with. But at least here you can buy OEM CDs with certain pieces of hardware, like HDDs, so that may be what you are talking about. I think nLite can slipstream SP2, easily, there is a guide at the site, but you may need another CD.
-
Hrm, out of curiosity, are you saying htat the XP cds check the hardawre platform to make sure it matches what it was bought with? Cause I've used OEM 98 discs, and I think XP discs and installed them on machines they weren't bought with.
-
It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some do some don't. Either way the license is only for that machine.

I bought something like this from Newegg and it works on my C2D MBP.

Barebones Windows good for me since I burn DVDs/CDs in OSX now that I have DL internal burner. Less junk on my system. -
Yeah, I really need to learn slip streaming. I hate installing XP and slipstreaming i twill make it so much easier.

Planning for a possible purchase. I''d like the option of using Windows through BootCamp or Parallels. What's the best method for me to install it? I know i need a complete install CD with SP2, but should I install through BootCamp or Parallels? I assume they both have some sort of partition/install utility...
Thanks. -
I chose Boot Camp because it has direct access to the GPU. And yes, you can specify the size of your partition. Don't know about Parallels, but hey, that smackbook thing is cool.

If you plan on playing games, use bootcamp. Otherwise use Parallels.
Installing XP soon.
