am looking for a good Image handling package that's lightweight yet supports at least the following features
- View slideshow from a directory
- Batch resize and/or convert images
I tried a bunch of apps on OS X but none came close
- JustLooking is a good slideshow viewer but no resize/convert capabilities
- CocoViewX is too bloated yet does not function as well as Irfanview
- SeaShore is a decent editor but no batch capabilities
-
IPhoto mabye? Not exactly sure what your looking for.

+1 fot iphoto,
also quickview is great for images too.

umm, QuickLook is probably as good as image viewing solution as Irfran View.
those are pretty basic requests.
and Automator is about as simple as a batch utility can be.
and they are part of the OS. -

Most of this functionality is built into Mac OS X.
Quick Look from the Finder will allow you to view your images in a slideshow, simply select whichever photos you want to see in a slideshow (or if you have a folder full of images you wish to use, select them all by using Cmd+A on your keyboard), hit the space bar to open Quick Look, and click on the "Full Screen" button, which should load a full screen slide show view of your images.
You get iLife '08 which includes iPhoto to manage your image library and create slideshows as well, you can also create picture books and other neat and creative things to share with your friends and family plus much more.
Preview can resize images as well as annotate and highlight, simply open your image in Preview and go to the Tools menu, there you will find "Adjust Size..." and other options for editing images.
You can use Automator to batch convert and resize images, here's how:
1. First, open Automator. You will be prompted with a flyout which asks you what kind of automation you would like to create, select the options outlined here:
2. To convert your images in Automator navigate to Library > Photos > Change Type of Images.
3. To resize your images, add "Scale Images" to your workflow, and specify the width that you wish to use when scaling, or a percentage value.
You can save this as an application to run in the future without having to go through these actions to re-create the workflow as well. I have attached a sample workflow to this post so that you can play with it yourself at your leisure.Attached Files:

Mercellus - thanks for the Automator guide - I had no idea it can do that.
And the OP: You are in luck, Google just released a beta for Picasa on Mac.
http://picasa.google.com/mac/
For those who don't know it, Picasa is what iPhoto should have been. Awesome, simple, fast photo management but without the iPhoto quirks, bugs, resource usage. And it's free to boot. If you have a GMail account you can also upload to picasa web galleries of course (free). That works on iPhoto too but only via plug-in. -
+2 for Xee
cheers ... -

I'm installing Picasa Mac. Let me see if it can beat Xee
IrfanView (or any other good image viewer/handler) equivalent for OS X
