I know the mhz is the same, but not sure about other specs of the processor.

Does anyone know if the 2.2 i7 processor of the early 2011 high end 15 inch macbook pro any slower than new 2.2 of late 2011?

Or are they the same processor and they put the new part on the high end?

I'd believe the processors are the same.

Well, the recently released processor is a the i7-2670QM (2.2GHz up to 3.1GHz Turbo/6MB Cache) is missing some instructions, has a memory expansion limited to 16GB as well as limited to the slower 1333MHz only. This processor is an updated/refreshed version of the i7-2630QM (2.0GHz up to 2.9GHz Turbo/6MB Cache).

While the i7-2720QM (2.2GHz up to 3.3GHz Turbo/6MB Cache) has a memory expansion up to 32GB and limited to 1600MHz memory, thus also having a higher memory bandwidth. It also some more instruction as compared to the 2600-series and has a faster graphics frequency. It's refreshed model is the i7-2760QM (2.4GHz up to 3.5GHz Turbo/6MB Cache).

As for the Mac Books, I'm not sure, you'd have to ask them, because there is a clear difference between both 2.2GHz processors, in terms of memory and the integrated graphics.
