Im about to get my mac and its £57 bcoz of the student discount.. Is it worth it?

I have applecare for my iphone and its pretty much just a warranty extension. I bought applecare for my iphone since its a small, mobile device that could easily be dropped or broken, I still haven't decided if I am going to buy an Applecare plan for my macbook though since I am very careful with computers and this one seems really durable ( one piece of solid aluminum with no welds)

As seshan said, look at my gnarly bill. -
-
WOAHHH $395 FOR A SUPER DRIVE!
Jesus i think its worth £57 -
Yeah for 3 years of no worry..I did it. 2 to go.
-
It's a great insurance policy, and I'd really recommend it for such an expensive investment...
-
If you ever need expensive repairs ----- worth every penny
If you never need expensive repairs ---- not worth the paper it's written on
Bottom line --- for most it's "Piece of Mind" -
for 57£?hell YES!!!!!!!

Tolkann, you should note that in general, Apple Care is an purchase that I would advise. However, considering that you are purchasing your macbook in the UK, you should note that you already have a 3 year warranty coverage by default. The 57 pounds that you are paying is only for an extension of the phone support. By default in the UK on a higher education purchase, you get 90 days of complimentary phone support. By paying 57 pounds, you extend the complimentary phone support to all 3 years.
Unfortunately in the US, education purchases only entail the standard 1 year warranty, although you can upgrade the Apple Care to 3 years for 183 dollars. -
Wait! So you're telling me that I have 3 years warranty?! (I am buying on a student discount btw)
-
Tolkann, you can check your warranty on apple website. -
Fan of Laptop and Tolkann,
Yes I am positive that systems purchased through the UK Higher Education store have a standard three year parts and labor warranty. Here is a direct quote:
"Special three year parts and labour coverage, with additional first-year warranty and support benefits, as standard"
From this website:
http://www.apple.com/uk/education/hed/nationalcontract/
Look on the right hand side of that website for more details. -
Tolkann, one more thing, in order to get the 3 YR warranty as standard, you must purchase the system through the Higher Education store, which requires you to order from an on-campus terminal or through the phone. More details available here:

my previous toshiba laptop gave me a fit after slightly more than 1 year, so does my current vaio. so when i bought my macbook as a backup, i specifically asked to have apple care.
besides luck of draw, it boils down to how heavy you uses you laptop. in my case, i am a pretty heavy user. i do hope the macbook built quality & reliability are better, otherwise, apple care will give me some good mileage ...
