Is Applecare or any of the extended/accidental care from places like CompUSA or Microcenter worth getting for the Macbook? Has anyone had good or bad experiences using these coverages?

I used to sell Apple notebooks at a university computer store (no commission), and we always had the same advice about applecare:
If you can afford it, get it.

It was very rare that anyone would come back to us and complain about their service.

I don't know how CompUSA's warranty is, but given the choice getting repair and telephone support from Bestbuy Canada/Futureshop or Applecare, I'd go Applecare.

How often do Apple computers break down? I'm planning on keeping my macbook pro for 4 years so when should I purchase applecare? I just bought the computer a couple months ago.

Extended warranties are worth it for any laptop.
Unlike desktops, doing DIY repairs are much harder to do and often expensive.

    Get it. It's worth it.

Does anyone know if you can transfer the warranty onto a new computer purchase - if for example a new badass apple laptop comes out that I just MUST get.

Does it matter where you purchase your Macbook? For instance..if my friend were to purchase the laptop from California before he came up to visit me in Canada to save the tax, could I purchase the Warranty at the local Apple store for my macbook? I know with a lot of dells and IBMs, they don't provide warranty for notebooks purchased in other countries.

Could you buy AppleCare after your regular one year warranty expires?

No. The warranty is good for that computer.

I believe Apple's warranty is worldwide, but I would ask them to be sure. Just call an Apple Store and tell them you travel a lot.

No, it must be purchased before the first year is up.

Doesn't matter, it's the same agreement all over the world. Buy it where it's cheapest for you :)

The thing is, if (when?) they break, it will almost certainly cost more than the price of applecare to fix it. Especially with a laptop.

To get around it, I used to skip Applecare and just sell my Macs after like 18 months or so.

I had the factory warranty for 1 year, and was just hoping to get lucky the other 6 months.

    You end up paying regardless.

So you can get Applecare anytime as long as it's within a year from purchase?! If that is true, I can stop worrying since I want Applecare but can't really afford it at purchase. It would be wonderful if someone could shed some light on this :D

Yes - you can purchase Apple Care within one year of the purchase of your notebook. Mind you, you don't get any phone tech support after 90 days.
