An old G4 iBook? That would be awful for gaming, especially since you can't run Windows on it.

The only decent Apple notebook for Windows games would be the Macbook Pro. But, if all you do is game, then there are much better non-Apple options out there than a $2000 MBP.

Yes the macbook pro has MORE than that.

It's got a core 2 duo, up to 4 GB RAM, countless hard drive space (you could upgrade yourself to 320GB), an 8600M GT graphics card (great for gaming) and all the rest. You'll need to use XP or Vista using bootcamp or the like, so get a hold of a Vista/XP product key (legally of course :) ) and you'll be good to go.

Although I second what Budding said, there are WAY better machines you can get for $2k for gaming and what not. I would personally recommend against the macbook pro and try something else.

The iBook G4 does not have an Intel or AMD processor, they previously used IBM-Motorola-Apple PowerPC processors :).

donvito129, it is "iBook", not "i book". playing grand theft auto san andreas on iBook is an impossible mission.

i think donvito is just a bit confused. here you go donvito:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...MTIzMTE&node=home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
on this page it shows the comparison between the laptops.
    apple makes 3 notebook computers:
they are the macbook, the macbook pro, and the macbook air. i dont know if you're actually referring to an ibook, or you are just new to the apple world. an ibook is an older apple computer that cannot play your game. the macbook and the macbook air have integrated video cards and cannot handle those 3d applications (games) very well. the macbook pro has what is called a dedicated video card. it can play the game you want, and even most new games.

here's the specs you posted you needed, and here is what the macbook pro has:
Req: Intel Pentuim 4 or AMD XP Processor (or better)
MBP 2.4ghz intel core2duo processor. (faster than a Pentium 4.)

    Req: 384MB RAM
    MBP: 2gb Memory. plenty again.

    Req: 16x Speed DVD Drive
MBP: Has a Dvd reader and writer.

    Req. 4.7GB Hard Drive Space
MBP: 200 or even 250GB of hard drive space.

    Req: 128MB Video Card
MBP: Nvidia 8600m GT. 256 MB video card.

Req: DirectX 9 compatible sound & video drivers
    MBP has DX 10 compatible

Req: Keyboard, mouse or game pad
MBP: all you need now is the mouse

is this what you wanted to know? of course you'd need to run windows XP on it with apple's bootcamp:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html

and of course the macbook pro itself:
    http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

let me know if this helps!

Any model of the MacBook Pro will run it fine (though the newer the better, of course). The better models of the iMac (must have an Intel processor) will also be able to run the game fine. No other Mac will be able to adequately run the game. Also, you'll need to have Vista or XP and install it on the Mac as well and use Boot Camp to be able to play the game.

To answer the original question, its not as simple as "yes" or "no". You can't just say "are PCs good for gaming", as that can refer to an Alienware desktop or a Windows 95 desktop.

The new Macs, such as the iMac and MacBook Pro, have pretty powerful graphics cards. Mac OS X, unfortunately doesn't have a very large selection of games available, so your best bet is to play them while running Windows on the Mac.

If you want to really experience the 'way it was meant to be', you should boot into Terminal mode by holding Cmd+Option+O+F when you power on the machine. You will be able to UNIX command line your way to glory.

To be honest, San Andreas isn't really that demanding. A standard macbook could run it without any problem. But if you want to play anything more demanding in the future, then you'll need to replace the whole computer.

    Just my two cents :D

    Here are your adjusted requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT (ie. without this, windows games (like GTA) will have 0% chance of working in ANY WAY. Aboslutely no functionality, won't even be able to attempt to install or load)

    Intel Processor.

All modern macintosh computers have this. If you buy an apple machine from the apple store, it has an intel processor. Also, if you buy a laptop called a "macbook pro" or a "macbook" or "macbook air" it has an intel processor, even if not bought new. Laptops labelled "ibook" or "powerbook" do not have intel processors. Desktop names are not as distinctive, and so you will have to check. the name "iMac" does not guarantee an intel processor, but newer imacs do have intel processors.

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENT (ie. some games, like GTA San Andreas, might be able to run without this, but many other games will need this to run at all. Also, every game, including GTA San Andreas will run more smoothly and look better if this is included)

    Dedicated Graphics Card.

There are different types of dedicated graphics cards, but modern macintosh computers have either the 8600m gt, or the hd 2600, which are mostly equivalent. the brand names of dedicated graphics cards (GPU's) are ATI and Nvidia. Different mac's use different branded cards, but it doesn't really matter.

the 8600, hd 2600, or x1600 are all common cards in macs, and those are listed in order of desirability, from greatest to least.

Well, that depends on what kind of iMac you have. If it's the latest iMac out, you'll be just fine, if you have the 1st gen iMac, you'll have some problems...

And also, you'll have to install Xp or Vista through bootcamp.

on the imac you want to install san andreas on, click on the apple in the upper left hand corner.

    click on "about this mac"

see what it says, and tell us. we can tell you if you can play GTA san andreas

Indeed? Thats interesting, because I play Crysis on my Macbook Pro sporting a meager 8600gt, averaging 45fps which is quite playable. Not to mention a 3dMark06 score of 6617.

Yes. You can game on a Mac. If you arent a moron.

Donvito, you need to tell us what kind of Macintosh computer you're going to game on. The older Macs won't support gaming, but newer ones will, so please, give us some more DETAILED information, what kind of mac, what are your SPECS.

Again, you will NEED to install Windows Vista/XP to game.

    Please get back to us.

alright i will answer your question.

no, YOU cannot play san andreas on your mac as it is.

you cannot buy san andreas for the mac, it does not exist.

    feel better?

however, someone who was very skilled with computers could play san andreas on their mac. it would require the ability to use boot camp and install windows xp.

A small irk about WC3 is that map editor isn't optimized for Intel processors on OS X so it loads very slowly.

Well first off, in order to get these scores I am not using the stock drivers Apple puts out through their update feature. Im using tweaked drivers from laptopvideo2go.com.

Secondly, i spent the time to dissassemble my MBP and remove the proprietary thermal compound apple applies to it replacing it with Arctic Silver. Its amazing what a big difference it makes. A cool GPU is a happy GPU. I never run hotter than 65 C with the fans at 3500 RPM. However I wouldnt recommend doing this unless your a certified tech, voiding your warranty = bad.

Thirdly i overclocked the GPU while running 3dmark just to hike the score up a bit.

Lol , I have to agree with clark on this one , 6600 is pretty much impossible on a 8600gt , Do you have the DDR2 or GDDR3 varient??

If it was a desktop setup I could understand the 6000 range, But even then it requires heavy volt modding and overclocking till the card is pratically dead.

Have you got a screenshot of this score :p.. Ill be amazed if its real, What clocks are you running it at??

The drivers from LV2G are not "tweaked" in any way. Only the .inf file is modified to allow installation of any NVIDIA driver on a mobile GPU. That's it.

I could see getting a score of 6600...if you're running at 800x600 at low quality LoD through the drive control panel. Otherwise, complete BS.
