Is iCloud necessary if you only use one device?

I only have the latest iPad and was thinking whether I actually need it? Any thoughts?

I've barely used it. The problem is that it doesn't seem to have a lot of the functionality that MobileMe has/had. The biggest change (for me) is that there's no iDisk or anything equivalent. Also hating the fact that I can't manage and share a calendar (used to add things to a calendar on MM that the whole family could view and add events to). So, it looks like I'll be using Google's features quite a bit more frequently in the near future. I won't be signing up for iCloud.

Short answer to your question is, it depends on your needs. You can quickly visit apple.com and pull up their iCloud page to determine if you'll need it.

I was hoping I could upload some of my game apps and use the Cloud to play them.

It doesn't work that way. iCloud allows apps to store data there - if the apps support it. There is no easy to access file system, it can't run apps for you and it is quite limited.

With that said, I do use it with Goodreader to keep all my PDF books in the cloud. That's about all it was good for for me.

You can backup your device to iCloud.. so if anything messes up and you have to restore it, or move to a new iPad, you can restore from backup right from iCloud and have everything the way you left it.
