I noticed that charging my 3rd gen 32GB ipod touch on my macbook pro takes not even half an hour while easily an hour and a half on my desktop. (I also noticed that it drains my macbook's battery like crazy when plugged). How can the drain be way faster on a macbook? I though USB was standard?

depends on the models... some of the newer laptops (and desktops) are putting out more max power on USB than before.

Ok. My desktop has an Antec 900 case, which starts to be a kind of old model I think. I still find it amazing how this things get charged in less than 30 minutes

it depends of the computer it's a well kow issue across several brand and more generaly laptop that the usb get under powered
my gf laptop cannot even charge my 3rd gen ipod 32gb it's usb are so underpowerd that if the ipod is under usage it can consume more power then there is provided and if you do the mistake of pluging 2 other periferal in the other availible usb port one of them will simply fall out of power
while at the same time my laptop can charge the same ipod in under 20 min if it's not the power consumsion rush hours -
Power output varies all over the place. It can even vary from port to port on laptops. The best charger is the one that comes with the iPad. That thing charges my iPod Nano and the iPad faster than any USB port on any of my systems.

im pretty sure mbp have high powered usb ports so yes it should charge faster

I just checked in the System Profiler, and it says 500mA, which is the same as other USB 2.0 laptops.

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
the fastest way to charge these things is in the wall socket. no contest. usb -> ac adapter -> wall
Is it me or does Ipod/Iphone charge faster when connected to a mac?
