I am considering buying a couple of macbooks for my kids, but am troubled by all these reports of the random shutdown problem. Has anyone experienced this problem on macbooks purchased since say mid-August, or is it only on the original factory run? i.e. I am wondering if Apple has figured out the hardware problem and quietly fixed it? The alternative is a Fujitsu laptop (which I am typing on now--have had it for two years and it's great but my kids like the macbook). Any feedback from new macbook owners would be appreciated. Thanks.

Apple just made a statement yesterday officially recognizing the problem, the issue is not exactly widespread meaning not everyone has it, but they have said that anyone who has the problems they will have you send in your MB for evaluation, and to be fixed. Anything after week 35 is said to be free of the problems.

week 35 from when?
-
from 2006 of course
= 28/08
but it is possible that you receive a macbook from an earlier date... -
I like your handle macbook_burning! Anyway, now that Apple has owned up to the problem I doubt they would not have a fix. Apple usually ignores these things until they can fix them. So in all likelihood any MacBook you buy now should not have that issue. The good news is that Apple has about the best support in the business (in the US at least) and should make things right if there is an issue.

From MacFixit.com:
The article recommended using coconutIdentityCard to find out when one's Macbook was made.
What disturbs me is that this article only dates from September 29 2006, only a couple days ago, though I would guess that the service document has been around longer than that.
Is random shutdown a problem on newer units?
