I was at the apple store yesterday and was trying to decide between macbooks. One key thing is text size. I found that the text on the 15inch high res was easier to read than the 17inch but wasn't really sure and I just wanted to confirm here. I do know that the higher the resolution, the smaller the text will be, but I feel that since the 17 is physically bigger, it should offset? or am i totally wrong? If it was unclear, what I really want to know is if i take a ruler and literally measure a letter on the 15inch would it be bigger than on the 17inch. Thanks

Just zoom in on the text. It will be the same, but the text will look nicer.
To me though the 15" is the best size, and it has a great resolution. I don't see the point in a 17" laptop that is more like a desktop it won't fit into bags and stuff.
The 17" macbook pro is also not like other 17" laptops in that the perfromance is the same as the lower priced 15"....you would think the graphics card would be higher and it might have quadcore or something. -
Thanks, that is what I am leaning to anyway even though i want a desktop replacement. The reason why i'd go with the 15 over a 17 for a desktop replacement is because i'd like to have less stress on the eyes if the text are indeed larger and easier to read. I just want to have clear cut proof that the literal text size is bigger. For example a letter on a 42" monitor might be half an inch and on a 15inch monitor it might be an eight of an inch while both have 1920x1200 resolution. so if both 15 and 17 inch macbooks had 1920x1080 I'd know the literal text size of the 17 would be bigger, but because the 15 has a lower res, i'm thinking it could be even or from what i think i saw bigger.

Mac OS X has very good DPI (pixel per inch, i.e. pixel density) adjustment settings, so if text appears too small for your liking, you could always reduce the DPI and make text appear larger without losing any quality.
That said, since the standard 15" MBP has a lower pixel density than the 17" MBP, text appears larger on the 15" MBP.
However, as a desktop replacement, I would recommend plugging the laptop into a decent quality external LCD, especially if eyestrain is of significant concern to you. -
Don't forget that the 17" is the only one with 3 USB ports. The 13" and 15" only have 2 USB. That's why I bought a 17", and it was a smoking deal.
Its a pain finding wallpaper in FHD though -
the 17" has > FHD resolution
generally speaking(depending on how good your eyes are), pixel density in regards to text size/readability is a minimal concern. the real focus of pixel density is video playback. although you can still argue that this has no effect. -
Is text smaller in 17" high res or the same as 15" high res
