Odd question, I know. But I am ordering a mbp and have yet to experience the glossy vs. antiglare in person. The only thing I have to compare is last years Sony Z. It has a lovely screen which doesn't have much of a gloss to it, so I can only assume it is what you would consider an antiglare or matte screen (I believe the quality may be better, but that isnt my concern at this point). What I'm wondering is if the matte appearance of the two is comparable or of the mpb screen is totally different...
I hope that makes sense.

depending on which Z you had the screen will not be as nice on the MBP and is concidered matte, as for the glossy vs matte, it depends on what you do with it or where you will be using it. by default the Apple screen is not so good in bright lighting and horrible in direct sunlight.
Personal preference is a matte screen especially if you do production work on it. -
I was just gonna make this thread about the 17". I think I'll just add my question here instead.
I was at an apple store today comparing them and I'm still not sure which way to go. From what I could tell, the glossy is more vibrant, but tends to crush blacks. The matte had some issues getting all the black resolved on the photos I was looking at...but maybe it was the photos themselves. I'm just not sure.
Both were *very* comparable. Perhaps it's the new GPU or a better matte screen, but the matte screen quality is much closer to the glossy (color reproduction) than i remember it being on models i looked at late last year.
My work is mostly print design and graphics design. If anyone has a strong feeling one way or the other, I'd love to hear it now. I might be buying one in the next week...so your thoughts will matter. -
ajrenol,
Seems like your "question" may have answered my question anyway. If you are saying there were even close in reproduction then for me it is a no brainer. I am generally not a fan of glossy screens, so hearing that the matte version is nice is all I wanted to know. -
Matte is nice for sure.
Not quite as rich, but not far. I stared at the 2 of them for 30 minutes comparing photos. -
I was trying to solve this question for myself as well.
I am worried that the matte screen will not be bright enough for my liking.
I too work in production (mostly 3d stuff but... ) and want to get the best for that, however I have a glossy screen now and I don't notice reflections too much. My brain just kind of ignores them now.
Does the matte *completely* get rid of reflections? or does it just tone them down a bit. If it just tones them I think i'd rather deal with a bright, vibrant screen and reflections. (ie. glossy) -
Completely removes reflections. night and day difference. And brightness is not an issue.
Glossy is more "contrasty", but I didn't notice it was brighter. -
I presume this picture is:
Antiglare on left, Glossy on right?
If I get an antiglare, does it have that ugly not-black border around screen? I am very fond of the black border around the glossy one and thought that came standard with all MBP's.... -

The Z's "matte" screen is not really like the traditional matte screens (think business notebooks), it's closer to Sony's LCD TV's coating. That said it's by no means glossy like the glossy MBP screens.
The matte MBP15 screen is just like you traditional matte screen. I don't get why they come with the silver bezel instead of the black one. The black one looks much better on the uni bodies.
I have seen all 3 screens myself. Actually I was at sony style the other day and both new/old Z were on display side by side, I must say teh old Z's display's colour looks alittle more saturated, maybe even too much. That could be because they were not calibrated though.
The MBP's 1440x900 matte screen is no worst that the glossy version. I am looking forward to seeing the 1680x1050 model. -
Sony Z and Macbook Pro screens are in the same league quality wise.
Except for the resolution of course, because Sony offers 1920*1080 and 1600*900 in 13.3". How useful that really is depends on the individual.
The matte coating is slightly different which may result in the Sony Z having better black levels. I did not have the chance to compare them side by side, but Notebookcheck and Notebookjournal can confirm this. -
-
I suppose that wouldn't look so bad then.
I just think the black border looks great.
But I think a Matte screen would best suit my use so... oh well -
just check it out at an Apple Store if you can. they both look fine. they really do.
-
No apple store in my city unfortunately, and Calgary (closest apple store) is a 2 hour drive
Oh well.
I think I'll take the leap and take my research into mind and go with the matte. Worst case scenario I return it within the time period and re-order a glossy one. -
next time I go, I'll take pictures for you.
as in, tomorrow. lol -

I am having a very hard time determining if the "less bright" colors will tear me away from my AG decision as it stands right now.
Get a nice colorful photo on both screens and shoot away -

Lots of MBP 17 matte and glossy pictures:

Phil those are great pictures.
Too bad I can't read the review because English is awesome. Haha
Thanks for the link though!
Is the anti-glare screen on the new 15" similar to that of a Vaio Z?
