I think you can downgrade to Lion from Mountain lion without loosing all your info... then again, I'm not 100% sure of this.

Mountain lion / lion / Snow leopard / Leopard --- These are still OSX, just throwing that out there.

You can't downgrade the Mac OS. It requires a reformat.

You also have to install the exact same point release (or greater) as the one that originally came with the machine. If it had Lion 10.7.3, you would need to install that version. You can't use a disc or recovery partition with 10.7.2 or previous.

Reports out this week from developers running the latest 10.8.1 beta now indicate that the battery issue is likely resolved.

This was a (real) issue that appeared limited to a limited subset of models or users - it has not been clear which, but it's now a positive development nonetheless.

Any indication if this relates to fresh installs or if this works with updates too?

10.8.1 will be released any day now so I would just wait. Here's the thing. Mountain Lion has been getting very positive reviews overall and probably the best point zero release ever in Mac OS history. As with any point zero release there will be some very minor bugs but also there are people that have an already complex and screwed up install from the previous OS such as all sorts of haxies and plug-ins that may cause the upgrade OS to run slightly unstable which is I why I ALWAYS do a reformat and install and manually install all of my apps. That way if anything is odd I will know it's the OS itself and not because the upgrade way didn't work well.

The battery issue has been mentioned quite a bit but there are also many people that say they've had zero issues with battery life so who knows who's doing clean installs? Also some people that do "clean installs" don't really know what a clean install is. They think they can reformat the hard drive, install Mountain Lion and then perform a Time Machine restore and dump all their apps back. That's not a clean install.
Every Mac OS clean install I have done have had almost none of the issues people have reported over the years.

I did a clean install of ML with no Time Machine restore and the battery is still not what it was with Lion. 10.8.1 just dropped a little while ago.

Battery life seems to be about the same to me. I just installed ML fresh on a brand new SSD. Immediately I let it patch to 10.8.1, then restored from Time Machine backup. This is the first time I've actually restored from a backup, got too lazy to redo everything manually this time. ML is noticeably more responsive than Lion - open the lid to wake from sleep I can immediately type my password (there was a 3-5 seconds pause in Lion), open the lid in clamshell mode and my external monitor immediately changes to an extended desktop (in Lion it sits there with a blank screen for like 10 seconds), and scrolling in Safari on long pages is smoother than before. Scrolling in Safari on a long and complex page can get a bit laggy before, I have not seen that lagginess yet, fast and smooth all the time even on my 1080 external monitor. I'm very curious to see if it addressed the laggy scrolling on the rMBP..

PS this is on a 2011 MBP 13, the SSD is a Sandisk 240GB Extreme.

I'm guessing you actually migrated from the backup and didn't restore the backup.

On my rMBP, I only have laggy safari scrolling and window resizing if one of its windows has Flash movies going.
