Hey guys,
i came across some issues in os x lion and hope someone can shed some light on these.
1) How to play mkv files using quicktime (tried perian but doesn't play mkv)
2) How to make devices (external hard disks etc) to appear on desktop?
3) How to add a dock separator (using terminal)
-
one for me...
when using zoom and you open up 'force quit' zoom freezes and move with the curser... -
Code:defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}' killall Dock

Are you running version 1.2.3? If not, update and try again as it contains a number of MKV fixes. Do all .mkvs fail to play with Perian or is it just one or two files?
Does it have to be with Quicktime? I personally find VLC a much faster and more capable video player. It'll play just about anything you throw at it and doesn't require external codecs. It's free. -
> weird.. I haven't been able to reproduce this...
try zooming in so say abut 2x-3x or so.
then click Apple > force quit.
center your mouse/zoomed in screen on the force quite window, and click on something... now try and move the curse to move the zoom frame to any side... it shouldn't work... you can zoom out but just not move the frame...
I think It's actually a bug from SL... but still would nice to see a fix. -
Also note there are many solutions for viewing mkv files on OSX now.
VLC is free and decent if you don't need subtitle support.
MPlayerOSX is free and can play just about anything.
MPlayerX is free on App Store and is good at rendering those files that run too slow on MPlayerOSX (and if you don't want to wait for the Perian prebuffer).
And if you absolutely need to, you can boot camp to Windows for CCCP (free) + CoreAVC (not free). -

What Zoom are you talking about.. the normal system zoom holding Ctrl and Scrolling in? Do you have it set to move the screen with the mouse or when it hits the edge of the screen?
What is Apple > force quit? I don't see any force quit there. Do you mean the Cmd+Opt+Esc force quit window? -
Cheers guys thanks for the reply.
Doh123 - tried reinstalling perian but to no avail. Still mkv is not playing and whenever i open an mkv file it loads for a while and then says that the machine need quicklime 7.
I have one tiny doubt and hope one of you can clear it for me;
when i used my trackpad in snow leopard i was able to resize folders, icons and swipe back and forth in finder when navigating. but in lion this feature seems unavailable. Did anyone else come across this issue? Now what i have to do is go and click the back button. -
2) Go to system preferences > trackpad > then under swipe, you have to manually change the shortcut from "two fingers" to "three fingers" or "two or three fingers"
It is funny how two finger swipe doesnt work so you HAVE to change it to three fingers, or two or three fingers... -

cheers thanks. but its interfering with the three tiger drag app gesture. I'm assuming there is no way around this right?
