Forgive me if this a stupid question. I'm a Mac newb. In windows I had my music sitting in my "My Music" folder and Itunes pulled from that. If I deleted something out of there I couldn't listen to the song.

When I got my Mac I moved all my music to the "Music" folder. I then dragged them into Itunes. Some time later I noticed the mp3s seem to be duplicated in the "Music" and "Itunes" subfolders.

My question is: Can I clear out my "Music" folder?

itunes copies music to its own folder deep in the bowels of the OS. you should be ok to just delete the folder that you originally had your music in. if you want to be sure, just move a file out of the music folder and see if it still plays in itunes. another check is right click on any song in your itunes library and check its path.

There is an option, and if you dont set it, itunes wont copy the music. If it is set, it will copy the music to a folder in the music folder, and you can delete your original mp3s. If you dont have that option set, if you delete the mp3, im pretty sure it will be gone forever.

I got a reply from the Apple forums just before I came back to delete this thread. Thanks though.

In addition you have this funtion
File > Library > Consolidate Library
This should move all your files into the one place.
You can then delete anyfiles outside this location.

yeah I would use the default iTunes functionality, it will save you a lot of time down the road, just clear out your itunes library, make sure to not send it to the trash, and just import your music from where ever you like, iTunes will automatically copy and organize it all for you into the iTunes Music folder, then you can just delete your music from its original location, as it should have all been copied.
