When you plug an iPhone into your computer, click on File and then click on Transfer Purchases from iPhone. That should manually start it. Keep in mind that your computer needs to be authorized to play your purchased content in order for this to work. It doesn't matter if the songs don't contain any DRM, your computer still needs to be authorized for the playback of your iTunes Store purchased content.

You can also download the songs again for free by going to the iTunes Store on your computer, clicking on Purchases, and finding the music (which shouldn't be too hard). Apple now lets you re-download purchased songs/album, TV shows, apps, and iBooks for free anytime you want.
