You must first be able to control your fear.

    Fear leads to anger.

    Anger leads to hate..

And hate.. Leads to the dark side of the force.

It's most likely a software problem. You can easily run the game at full detail with an Intel GMA X3100. My suggestion is install the latest patch and update (or change it to an earlier version if possible) your display drivers; that's all you can do really.

No offense, but what more advice do you want? As I said, there's nothing else you can do but reinstall software.

    Follow these four steps:

    1) Patch the game.
    2) Update your display drivers.
    3) Reinstall Direct X.
    4) Reinstall the game.
    5) Resintall the OS (Windows XP recommended).

I am sure he is actually running this in OS X. In which case the only option he really has is patch the game (which he said he did) and reinstall the OS (which doesn't usually do a lot for OS X and software issues).

My friend's Powerbook G4 ran it just fine, so I don't see what the issue is. Have you searched Google to see if there's an issue with particular graphics cards? I know for one thing that Ford Racing 3 doesn't seem to want to run on a 7900GS/Quadro 1500M, so maybe you're seeing the same thing here with the 8600.

If this helps....I don't think it's a very fun game anyways.

first- to cy007, i wasn't referring to you when i said unhelpful.

second, i didn't know that i had to install the game in the default directory. the patch can't figure out where the game is installed if its not the default directory, and somehow the broken install only cripples the performance... (i would expect it not to run at all, but what do i know)

i figured it out because i reinstalled the game (pre patch) and it worked fine. post patch crippled it. i just had a hunch i guess. i really just want quake 3. i remember the multiplayer USED to be really fun because it was basically an extended and revamped quake 3...

    sigh... good old days

it runs flawlessly now. now that i got it working i probably won't play it anymore ;)

Hey now, you could go a long way with fear->anger->hate->suffering. It's the stuff religions and philosophy are made of :p I bet it's ultimately more useful than figuring out how to install Quake in the long run :D
