My 15" 2.8GHz mbp works fine (only had it for 2 days now) with the stock 500gb hitachi hdd. BUT if I try to install a hitachi travelstar 320gb 7200rpm 3.0 Gb/s hdd it freezes occasionally with the color wheel of death!

Color wheel of death ha? That's the first time I've ever heard it called that. :D
I've been reading that some are having issues with the update. Apple could very well release a new firmware to fix these issues in the near future so I wouldn't worry, but I would file a report with Apple though.

I just hope that these 13" and 15" mbp does have the 3.0 Gb/s sata controllers because if it really was a hardware issue I'd be so angry when no firmware in the future fixes this issue.

Just got back from the Apple store. Apparently the apple geniuses knows about this SATA-I/SATA-II issues. Just got a refund with no restock fee.

    Good riddance. :)

Does this only affect the 13" and 15" or the 17" as well?

    What are you getting instead?

AFAIK, only 13 and 15 " were affected!
