Its really fast and sick... but its SO FRIGGIN HOT, its too hot to use on my lap, I turned it off and I'm gonna let it cool down and see if its any better, I had a bunch of OS updates and a firmware update that will hopefully fix it, but if its not considerably cooler I'm gonna return it or exchange it or something... this sucks. and on top of that, I had a desktop HD with all of my Music, and I totally broke my external enclosure so I cant get my music on my laptop either

Enclosures are cheap.
-
You can probably pickup an enclosure for $10, which is a lot cheaper than that MacBook you have
-
try the fireware but i don't think it will help. the mac book computers have been have alot of trouble with heat lattly but you might a well try
-
Thats because "MB/MBP's aren't laptops, they are notebooks."
My MB works wonderfully, and yet its strange yours is "friggin hot" considering the 17" is suppose to be cooler.
I rarely ever put my notebooks on my laptop, it just feels weird typing that way. If you're gonna return it at least seriously consider the MB, mine has been running like a dream, also with the money you'll have left over you can do a quick memory upgrade yourself. -
yeah... I thought they were supposed to be cooler too, but its far too hot, and I use my LAPTOPS on my lap a lot, I called apple and they gave me that like "Its a notebook, its not supposed to be used on your lap" well screw you I just spend $3000 on a computer i'm gonna use it on my lap if I want to...
-
yeah, I loved the macbooks a lot, espically the black ones, I'm either going to get that or a Dell D820 I think

Apples marketing change:-\ -
well I called them up (I was on the phone for liek 45 mins) and I'm going to return it, its just too hot and its so annoying to type on, I cant wear a watch when itype because it rubs on the palmrest and it hurts my wrists, ugh this sucks
-
wow that sucks, but I am wondering do people use a 17" notebook on there lap? Isn't it sooo big?
~Arman -
Oh man... that sucks.
-
You thought the MBP wouldn't be hot? After ALL THESE THREADS about the heat the MBP's produce? -
I knew it would be warm, but how many threads are there at all about the 17" MBP? like none at all, I went to Small Dog and the one they had wasnt very hot at all, after using it more Ireally like it a lot and I want to keep it, I'm just not sure if I want to deal with the heat... I think I'll know for sure in a couple of days or not if I can deal with it.
yeah, the screen size isnt an issue at all espically with the MBP because its so thin and light (for a 17") its not too big for lap use at all -
If it is really that hot, I would try to exchange it. The 17" should not get THAT hot. A 15 maybe, but not the 17's.

kingcrowing, I just stumbled across this story:
Link
It seems the 17" just got a firmware upgrade today. These are not always included in the normal software update, so I would poke around and be sure you got it. According to the story it seems it changes the behavior of the fans and such.
**EDIT** Here is a link to the actual download: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookpro17inchsmcfirmwareupdate.html
It is the SMC firmware which was already updated in the 15" and people claim has caused their computers to run cooler. It is worth a shot. I'd hate to see you leave Apple so soon. -
I recently got my 15" MacBook Pro. While it certainly doesn't run cool, when on my lap, the heat is only painful if it is on my bare skin. A pair of jeans or anything of about that thickness makes the heat only seem very warm, but niether hot nor scalding. I worked pretty intensely in GarageBand, had torrents downloading, firefox open, and was chatting in iChat. So I would consider that decent sized workload to base the heat intensity off of.
Funny you mention that the watch bugs you when typing on it. It also bothered me. I have a big heavy sailing chronographer with alot of functions so I just passed it off as being due to its size.
Over all I am very pleased with my purchase. -
I actually do not type with my watch on either. But I dont' do that with any notebook since your hands generally sit even with the keyboard. Oh well, I see kingcrowing got a D820 instead. Sorry to see you leave the Mac family, but I am sure you will be happy with the D820, its a really nice notebook! Good luck!
-
Thats a shame, I think after using mac I couldn't go back to Windows, actually when I get on a system running windows I feel weird now.
-
well I did get the firmware update and it didnt really help at all... Its too bad because I love macs, but I guess after using one I'm not a huge fan of the MBP, and ans much as I love the Macbook, its just not enough computer for me. I need something a bit more powerful with a larger screen for my full time computer for the next four years. (The D820 is 15" widescreen@1920x1200)
But don't worry, I haven't given up hope, I'm still going to be an apple desktop user, not that I have a desktop now, but I will get one eventually, perhaps a intel powermac once they are released and come down a bit in price.
Just got 17" Macbook pro
