What exactly did you buy.... because it's a bit confusing to understand what you said...

There is an iPod Touch (no such thing as an iTouch) which is just an ipod with wifi.

The third generation iPod touch received a faster processor and memory but only the 16 and 32 GB model. The "third generation" 8GB ipod touch is just a "second generation" ipod touch.

You bought a $200 piece of hardware and you're asking what to do with it?

I would say return it, since you obviously didn't need it.

    Well that's nice.

The website does have a 3rd Gen iPod Touch 8GB. I think he meant to say that the iphone would have been alright. As for what to do with it? Return it for an iPad. :D Really though, you should enjoy it. Start by installing iTunes on your computer if you haven't already. Then start shopping the App store for some free apps to get you started.

i think you return it... if you don't know what to do with it you won't get $200 of utility out of it...

plus the ipod touch 2g (i guess this is the one you bought) isn't going to support all the cool iphone os 4.0 goodies.

Well thanks for the replies. It is a Ipod Touch 8GB 3Gen. I am asking what to do with it, because it is new, and i would enjoy trying all new things with it. Im only laptop/computer. the IPhone i mean to say would of been nice, but cell service is lacking.

    This is what i ordered.
    Newegg.com - Apple iPod Touch 8GB 3rd Generation (MC086LL/A)

So you are saying that apple is up to this bs already? calling 3G when no difference in between 2G&3G. I hope not.

Looks like no multi-tasking for you.

iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).

That sucks!! Now I'd have to say cancel the order.

I generally try not to tell people they should return stuff, but I have to agree with Jervis on this one...

iTouch.. the chinese rip off version from eBay?!?

    Lol on a side note:

I just tethered my new nexus one to the iPad (wifi version of course) and now I have 3g everywhere I go. Keep nexus one in my pocket and use the university's wifi, once it drops (like it always does) or slows to a crawl (with everyone connected to it), I can just press one button on the nexus one and serve 3g to my iPad!

Its fast too, I d/led an app just a minute ago and it was at a steady 190-250 Kb/s.

Actually I'm tethered to my nexus one's 3g right now on my 17" macbook pro, works like a charm!

There is a difference between the 2G and 3G ipod touch models, a big difference.

The dirty thing they are doing is selling the 2G ipod touch 8GB alongside the 3G ipods (32GB and 64GB). Check out wikipedia for more details.

ahh so you are telling me i cant be on AIM, and just "minimize" it, and open up the web browser, and search online forums, while still being connected to aim?
I really was thinking about using it as a laptop replacement, because all i do on the laptop is AIM, Mail, Ebay, Online forums, and Youtube..

a new model that can support multitasking when iPhoneOS 4.0 is released.... you can probably do all those things you want to do....

the one you have, which wont ever be able to multitask... its going to suck....

like if your on AIM to chat and want to do something else, you have to close AIM... not just switch apps, you have to completely close it and log out of it.... etc...

I would not consider the iPod or even the iPad a full laptop replacement. They can perform many of the same functions as your laptop but still need a computer (Mac or PC) to sync with. If i were to even attempt using one as a laptop replacement I would use the iPad. The iPod touch is just too small. The iPad on the other hand is the system I use the most currently but I still use my Mac on occasion. My work wont let me connect to the exchange server on mobile devices currently.

You could put music on it, but that's kinda silly, don't know why anyone would do that :S

you actually can kind of do this already. applications support push notifications, so some types of things can already be done, like this. basically, some applications log you into through their servers, not directly. this means that you can stay logged in when you close the app, and you will get notifications if someone IMs you, even if the app isn't running. then you can open the app and respond to the updated conversation. it works great for those types of things.

so, push notifications work well for certain things (you can imagine mail messages, cell texting, aim, etc)

backgrounding does not (you can't check mail or the internet while running pandora, or get skype to accept incoming calls without having the app running, etc)
